Nematodes are found in the cane fields of Queensland, especially around towns like Bundaberg, Rockhampton and Gladstone. Nematodes only get seen at night. They are usually attracted by a setting sun to the extent that the Aussies have started putting four big Xs across the signs to warn of their appearance on roads on or after dusk. Usually pretty harmless, they make a hell of a racket - they cannot sing very well and can't spell.
There is an old folklore about a messaging service up that way and when a message needed to be relayed they would refer to it as having been onsteamed - of course they used trains powered by steam then - not the internet.
The truth is that they are tiny organisms which can live in the stupidest places like under glaciers and in intense pressures and heats and colds.
