Light Painting - Long Exposure Photography

in thesteemengine •  6 years ago  (edited)

It has been a rough couple of weeks here at the Bulldog house. We have some major building works happening and it is taking it out of us all.

I haven't had chance to write about my college lesson last week until now, but I really wanted to update you guys and make a record of it, whilst it is still fresh in my mind!

This week, we focused on 'Long Exposure Photography', specifically light painting.

Light Painting is achieved by keeping the shutter open on the camera for an extended period of time... these were taken using a shutter speed of 15 seconds.

The room we were working in was actually a theatre and was completely blacked out. The tools we used were various coloured LED lights, which were swirled around on stage by our tutor (being very careful not to fall off the edge of the platform in the dark!)

wjydfhjlgg.jpg

The lights were extremely bright, so the settings on our cameras had to be altered to achieve the black background, as the initial images had parts of the stage lit up too.

We reduced the amount of light that was able to get onto the lens by increasing the F number (I think I was at F13 here) and changing the ISO, being mindful that the images were not appearing too grainy by taking the ISO too high.

We also tried an experiment where one of my fellow class mates volunteered to be the silhouette in front of the lights! This produced a really cool effect ...

And of course, I couldn't get the backgrounds completely blacked out using purely my camera settings due to the bright lights, so there was some post processing in photoshop to remove any unwanted stray particles of light that crept into the images.

Out of 10, I would rate this lesson as a definite 10/10 on the fun scale! If you get chance to try light painting out working with a buddy, I would definitely give it a try!

Oh, and one final tip... you NEED A TRIPOD!!!! You cannot do this type of photography by hand as any slight movement completely ruins the image.

Let me know if you have taken any similar images! :D

Thank you so much for visiting! Much love, BB xx

A huge thank you to @zord189 for my bouncing bullies signature!

Love it, love it, blooooooming love it!! I have managed to find myself a decent book from the 90's(Specific to SLR only) and this technique was briefly described within. I can't wait to try this out and it looks like my mum is gonna have to see me do some weird moves in the garden tonight, lol. Great results, BB. My personal favourite is your 2nd image. Keep the tutorials coming!

Haha I will keep an eye out in the Evening Post for reports of alien lights in Nottingham! ;)
Thank you so much, I am glad you enjoyed them! I can't wait to see your results too!

I must do some light painting when I get a camera

Yes! You absolutely must! :D
BB <3

I just love these! Scot does this type of photography, but focuses on the stars. I am so loving how bright the colors are and what amazing shapes they make.

Thanks for sharing, they are so fun!
Ren

Thank you so much Ren! :D
How long does Scot leave the shutter open for when shooting the stars?
BB <3

The basic rule of thumb is 500 divided by the focal length of your lens. So a 50 mm lens you would use 10 seconds. I use an 18 mm most of the time, so around 20 seconds. Any longer and the motion of the stars will leave star trails.

Scott

Thank you so much for this Scott! That is an awesome tip! :D I can't wait to give it a try
BB <3

You are welcome.

Ah yes! Kids will love to do this! get them twirling around with led strip lights, that would be awesome! :D
BB <3

Great work. I love this awesome shots.

thank you :)

Love the images. I bet this technique would be useful for photographing fireworks as well.

Thank you! :D
Yes! This technique is exactly what you would use to capture fireworks! :)
BB <3

@beautifulbullies,

All the photos are very compelling. I especially like #2, #6 and #7 ... I have no idea why.

It's amazing the effects that technology can achieve.

Quill

Thank you @quillfire! :)
Yes, technology can do amazing things once we know how to utilise it properly
BB

Those photos looks so lovely and amusing to look at. It must be fun to enroll in a class that teaches photography. Thank you so much for sharing this with us!

It really was the best thing enrolling in the course :)

this is so cool! my favorite is the last one. It is oike a wave of sunny rays

Thank you! :D

Light painting is so fun.
We have experimented some and had so much fun.

Love them. This technique is ace but I'm unsure how to get such a long exposure on my digital DSLR. Must be a setting but I've not found it yet!

Great results for a first go!

Thank you so much! So glad you like them! :)
I also used a DSLR. If you go to the dial on the top of the camera, turn it to 'S' which is shutter priority, then you can alter the settings to the shutter speed you want. You will know when you are working with whole seconds as it is indicated by the " sign next to the numbers :) Have a go and let me know how you get on!
BB

Ah ha, I'll try that 'S' setting. Great tip, thanks!!

Wooo now that's something else :D so pretty.

This is so cool!! Sounds like a great class! I am a iphone shoot and click type of a picture taker and am very impressed!!

Heavens this looks to be a fun class! I bet sitting in the dark and taking shots to then see these amazing results must be a blast.

Good luck getting your building work done, always a struggle with workmen and builders. You have to have lots of tea and coffee for their breaks ;)

Great light play!

That must be a really fun class! You came away with some really great images. I would give you an A!
