The gospel of Luke teaches in the encounter of Jesus with Martha and Mary that the most valuable thing is the Kingdom of God, the dominion or empire of God's perfections, and that the worldly things are of no great importance.
Martha and Mary were ordinary women who had heard about Jesus and wanted to meet him. In fact, Martha opened the doors of her house to Jesus to accommodate him. Martha was perhaps the most curious, but Mary behaved like the most devout, because she sat at the feet of Jesus; according to the gospel, for this reason, Martha complained because Mary did not help her with the housework.
It is natural that the activities that are typical of everyday, well-being, happiness, get enough money to buy things are a concern; but man's life must always be ordered to the most important good, the blessedness, and that is what Martha did.
Jesus in the gospels is presented as the personification of this beatitude, that is, as God who becomes the "son of man", and therefore listening to his word and imitating him is the most sensible thing, like the example that Mary gave.
With these words, the Gospel of Luke recounts the encounter:
"As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, ´Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!´
´Martha, Martha,´ the Lord answered, ´you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.´" Luke 10:38-42.
