Paul, who was a great christian preacher, during his second missionary journey arrived in the Greek city of Athens. And it was there, according to the Book of the Acts of the Apostles, where Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, left us a thought of great depth about the nature of God.
In Greece Paul became aware of the problem of idolatry: "While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was greatly distressed to see that the city was full of idols" Acts 17:16. And there he was invited to discuss his ideas with greek philosophers: "A group of Epicurean and Stoic philosophers began to debate with him" Acts 17:18.
Many Greeks found the Christian teachings about the life of Jesus shocking, particularly the ideas about justification and about the death and resurrection of Jesus. And so, upon hearing Paul's ideas, the philosophers responded: "You are bringing some strange ideas to our ears, and we would like to know what they mean" Acts 17:20.
At first, the doctrine of the Kingdom of God was not well received and Paul had to work hard to found the first churches in Greece; the early church was beginning to take its first steps among the God-fearing pagans, the true recipients of Paul's message.
The apostle Paul explained to the pagans that God cannot be represented by an image, God is the wisdom itself; to understand this is to understand the mystery of Christ, wisdom is the most perfect immaterial object that exists, and for this reason, God calls us to be wise and upright like him, and with these words Paul, the preacher, explained this spiritual truth:
"Therefore since we are God's offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone—an image made by human design and skill. In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent" Acts 17:29-30.
