All the sapiential books such as Psalms, Proverbs, and Ecclesiastes have a unique literary style, because these books do not call men to the simple faith but to the trust in God, and this security in the Lord is based on a spiritual principle or thought of the Psalm 1, the Psalm of the two ways: "For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction" Psalm 1:6.
And the Psalm 55 as a prayer to God, and continuing the teachings of Psalm 1, is a plea of a righteous man persecuted by his enemies who awaits God's protection.
Thus begins Psalm 55:
"Listen to my prayer, O God,
do not ignore my plea;
hear me and answer me.
My thoughts trouble me and I am distraught
because of what my enemy is saying,
because of the threats of the wicked;
for they bring down suffering on me
and assail me in their anger" Psalm 55:1-3.
The Book of Psalms in its teachings is clear, righteousness and sin are opposite paths, and the righteous man and the sinful man cannot live together; and in a world given over to sin, it is logical that a righteous man suffers the persecution of his enemies, and this is what the Psalm 55 deals with.
For this reason, in the face of difficulties and the persecution, the author of the Psalm 55 put all his trust and confidence in the Lord, because the like attracts the like; God is righteous and merciful, and in his wisdom the Lord does not forget his children.
That is why the psalmist recognized God as the only savior for mankind:
"As for me, I call to God,
and the LORD saves me" Psalm 55:16.
The Book of Psalms teaches to the readers the most excellent, that is why the Psalmist ended his song teaching wisely that whoever lives righteously builds on good foundations; but whoever sins, does it so on weak foundations:
"Cast your cares on the LORD
and he will sustain you;
he will never let
the righteous be shaken.
But you, God, will bring down the wicked
into the pit of decay;
the bloodthirsty and deceitful
will not live out half their days.
But as for me, I trust in you." Psalm 55:22-23.
