What AM I?

in thought •  8 years ago  (edited)

Recently, I have been thinking about the nature of thought and existence. In the 1600’s Rene Descartes wrote cogito ergo sum “I think, therefore I am” as a proof for existence and to show that this world was not an illusion. But what comes before the I am? – The Think. Which leads me to ask what I am – but perhaps a thought?

If existence is contingent on thought, then what of that which surrounds and is devoid of thought? Does it mean that the world that we see around us is a mere product of our thought? A simple conjuration of ideas into a complex, self-defined reality? If so, does it explain how two people can have completely different experiences of the physical world, despite the same tangible input?

I would like to think something so fantastical to be a possibility.

Sadly, I think the greater possibility is that Descartes liked the sound of his own words, considering nothing more than the aesthetic of the phrase.

I suppose I am the devil's advocate (to turn another common phrase) according to your logic.

What if thought is a focusing agent of vibration? And, what if vibration is an ether of all that is?

A collective of thought could potentially create an essentially common experience of what was manifested in vibration by the collective thought, and yet each experience could still be unique if experienced from a separate point of view.

Hence the power of music to guide the soul! An interesting theory at the least. Whimsical, but maybe not so far off, since scientifically all matter produces waves. Even the stars "sing.
