As a result, these kinds of social platforms are literally ingrained into their very development: for many, there is no way of life pre-social-network.

There is a reason they have been trained to value quantity over quality, to respond to the number of likes and shares no matter the content or value of response. They have been trained to value multiplication of network, not value of interaction. A cancer cell.

I suppose for me, it all boils down to balance: not all interactions need be heavy, nor should they all be light. IMHO!

I agree but the problem is that without experience of heavy, all becomes light and what that means is, opinions made on headlines and memes. As you said, millennials have grown up in this environment and, not many of them seem happy.
