How to be a spy - Pixabay CCO

Best thing to do at this time, was go to the cops. I retrieved the strange box, suddenly realizing that I may have damaged the box, seeing that the item could very well have been fragile, and I had just flung it into somebody’s face. While initially I wanted to just run along and escape, I decided that I would find something with which to restrain the knocked-out fellow, to avoid someone coming after me.

The man had handcuffs on him. Handcuffs! So I knew it was wise to attempt to see if I could prevent this guy from following me when he recovered. After a bit of struggling, I dragged the man to a street lamp and cuffed his two hands to it.

Having completed this task, I picked the box, to realize that it had these cracks, and they were glowing with this weird blue light. Looking closer, I saw they were not cracks, but some designs etched into the box. As I touched it, the light changed to green. Initially I was afraid, because, hey, who touches a glowing object and it changes color and you don’t expect a missile strike or something?

Nothing happened.

Well, that was for the best, I suppose. Quickly putting the box in my bag, I headed off. I had not gone very far when my phone rang again. I pulled out my phone and saw a strange number. I didn’t want to pick it, but I just decided, I’ll pick the call, and make my way to the police station. Whatever happened, the cops would handle that.

To my surprise, the caller was the old fellow who had collected my phone earlier. He seemed quite out of breath, and his voice was urgent. “Hey, kid, where’s the box I gave you?”

“First,” I answered angrily, “would you mind explaining to me what’s going on?”

“I will,” he answered, “but first I need to know: is the box safe?”

“Yes,” I replied, “it’s safe, although it’s shining this odd green light.”

“Why?” he asked, sounding frantic. “What did you do with it? Did it ever shine blue?”

I sighed. “I smashed someone in the face with it, that’s what. And before you start shouting, he pointed a gun at me. Oh, and where’s my phone? Someone said you gave her my phone, and I want it back. I have highscores on most of the games.”

The man was silent for a moment, then he said, “the phone is the last thing that should be on your mind. Come to the police station, and quickly too.”

Don’t great minds think alike? Because I was already headed there now.

To be continued...
