TikTok is not currently banned in the United States. However, in 2020, former President Donald Trump threatened to ban TikTok due to concerns about national security and the Chinese-owned company's handling of user data.
The Trump administration claimed that TikTok posed a threat to national security because the app collects data on U.S. users, which could be accessed by the Chinese government. In response, the U.S. Department of Commerce issued an executive order that would have effectively banned TikTok in the United States unless it was sold to a U.S. company.
However, several legal challenges were filed against the executive order, and a federal judge temporarily blocked the ban in September 2020. In November 2020, the Trump administration issued another executive order that would have required TikTok to sell its U.S. operations to an American company or face a ban, but this order was also blocked by a federal judge.
In December 2020, TikTok reached a deal with Oracle and Walmart to create a new company, TikTok Global, that would be based in the United States and partially owned by American companies. This deal was subject to approval by the Trump administration, but it was never finalized.
Since then, the Biden administration has taken a less aggressive stance on TikTok, and the app remains available in the United States.
