TIL that car repairs are expensive...

So my car has been giving me issues for quite some time but being the guy that I am, I tend to ignore them for as long as possible hoping they will fix themselves. Does that sound like anyone else? Well taking into account that I was going to be traveling long distances in the near future with my baby, stepson, and significant other all on-board I figured I'd better get the car looked at before anything bad happens.

To give some specific details on what exactly was going on; the car had been not starting right away, shaking quite a bit when stopped at a stop light, front right wheel wobbling a bit, and lots of play with the steering wheel, not to mention it just didn't "feel" right.

So I took the car into the local car repair shop and 6 hours later I get a phone call telling me that the car needs a new alternator, needs new motor mounts (all of them), new spark plug, numerous leaking gaskets, struts on one of the tires needs to be replaced, power steering fluid and oil both leaking... Not to my surprise it was a pretty long list.

I asked him what the damage would be... he told me to do all the things it would cost close to $3,000. I said "yikes... what is absolutely necessary to get fixed before I take my family on a trip?" He said, "well to be honest with you...probably all of it, just to be safe". Lucky for me they offer payment plans that I can stretch over 18 months...

So TIL that car repairs are expensive!

Hahaha whenever my car makes funny noises, I turn the sterio up!

Haha clever!

I know right! It's fun being me!

Is that you in the light colored shirt? If so, today I learned that jr cornel is strong enough to hold up a car with one hand!!!

Well... I don't like to brag... :)

Sometimes the repairs are more than the value of the car!

Yea seriously! It was almost to that point...

I had some similar repairs on my own car recently. It makes you consider if it is worth keeping it.

Buy second hand car for that money from dealer with warranty and drive for at least for another year.

Thankfully, they gave me a 1 year warranty on all of the work they did... I have been going to them for a long time and I trust them... they have been pretty good to me in the past.

The last time I had an issue with a dear... the bill was of about 2500 EUR (for only pieces of metal to fix!). I was happy to have a good insurance :D

Wow... that is ridiculous! Glad the insurance was able to help out! :)

Yikes!! I usually fix things myself. And if I got a quote like that, I'd be getting a second opinion.

Yea seriously... unfortunately I do not have the tools, parts, or skills to fix this many things on my own... and these guys have been pretty good to me in the past. I trust them.

That's good. A mechanic you can trust is worth his weight in gold.

Good point and I agree!
