I was pretty surprised to find that in Talkeetna, a town in Alaska has had a cat for a mayor for the past 19 years. That sounds totally bizarre that an animal sits where a human should sit (both figuratively and literally).
But it is true. The cat even has a name and is called Stubbs the cat or Mayor Stubbs. He was born in 1997 and it was the same year that he was chosen as a mayor.
The story behind how that happened is pretty interesting too. Apparently, in 1997, the people of Talkeetna weren’t happy with the choice of candidates for mayor and chose this cat instead, thought the NPR refutes this claim by the residents of the town.
Stubbs the mayor, is actually really an honorary figurehead as Talkeetna is a historical town with a population of about only 900 people and has no real mayor.
The feline mayor is very demanding though and its ‘owner’ has to take constant care of him. He even drinks water from a wine glass with catnip every afternoon.
People of the town jokingly say that they are happy with the mayor as he doesn’t raise the taxes and doesn’t interfere with business. All in all, people are very happy with his, …ermm, leadership. Now if could also run for the presidency….
