TIL: Bubble Wrap Was Originally Designed To Be Used As Wallpaper

We all love those bubbly, plasticky things, don’t we? As soon as we hold one in our hands, we just can’t help but pop it. They are really fun to play with and are used extensively all around the world as packaging material to safeguard delicate products.

But today I learned that this was not their intended purpose when it was invented by two engineers named Alfred Fielding and March Chavannes in 1957. No, they were actually hoping to sell it as a textured wallpaper.

While it would have been really amusing to have bubble wrap as your wallpaper, the idea became a flop. It was only three years after the invention of the bubble wrap did the inventors finally find its destined purpose. The same purpose that it fulfils today.

That's crazy!

yeah, I agree!

I like to play with this too.
As wallpaper, it should be safe to bang your head against the wall. :-)

haha, I was thinking that too, but more on the lines of running directly at the wall just for the fun of it ;)
