Have you noticed that when we are in a bad situation in life suddenly, we feel that we are stuck and that time is not moving, we feel like we are in it forever. Then there are good situations in life where we feel time is racing and it's moving at a supersonic speed. So does the length of the time change in any way. No, the number of seconds, minutes, hours in a day are exactly the same all throughout our life. And yet we feel time lapse at certain times and stuck in time at certain.
This is called the Time perception, more then the time, it's the experience of time that we are going through which roots in our mental state. The experience of time is created in our mind. When we are gripped by any fear in our mind time slows down. A study was done on a group of people who are scared of insects and have phobia. They were asked to stare at a spider for sometime, not revealing them the time. It was only 45 seconds, but when finished they all felt that it was much more. When the mind is gripped in fear the perception of time changes in the mind and it slows down mentally. The time is same, but the feeling of it has changed.
Like wise for happy events also, it is in the mind that the time is running. On the clock it is the same. As we age also we feel that the time is moving fast. Feels the year has gone by so quickly. It is the tempo and speed of life that defines our perception of time as we age.
In reality the speed of the actual time never changes, it is only in the mind the speed changes based on how we perceive time. A person who lives in the now moment every second will have lesser fluctuations with the perception of time and will find time much more steady then the one who is always looking towards past and future and keeps doing mental time travel.
