The Time When Churches Were the Tallest Structure in a City or Town

in times-change •  8 years ago  (edited)

Long ago any town you arrived in no matter where you were you could see its steeple, now the tallest is a bank.

A tribute to the most important thing in that regions culture. Almost all religions did this through out history. It was a symbol of who holds the true power and should never have a problem finding the path to God's house.

(There would have been a lot less buildings 150 years ago).

As I wandered around Montreal I couldn't help but notice this particular steeple visible from afar peering at them through buildings.

Eventually I found my way to its steps. This isn't even a big church for Montreal, there some three times bigger at least .

Even after continuing past it could be seen from the other direction from just as far.

Seen all the way from here; where ever it is I am at this moment, it feels far because I walked and it's hot.

Today it seems banks are the most powerful thing in any culture. You can love and worship God all you want but you can't deny when many people are in trouble or need some help they will probably think of money and how it will solve the issue or create happiness. Even the churches need money, lots of it.

Keep that in mind next time you find yourself in need of a fixing; just look up at the tallest building and that's who has you by the gonads.

Good info about the churches, was not aware of the reason for the steeples. Looking at the steeples :]

On a world view, the biggest and tallest buildings are now all going up in the prosperous middle eastern countries and in some Asian cities. Those buildings now in the western cities all have foreign ownership. Quite telling now who owns our gonards!!

That is very true. The tables have turned and flipped over. Globalization will make equal slaves of us all. Now it doesn't matter where u are rich or poor; whose god or money you worship.

"It was a symbol of who holds the true power and should never have a problem finding the path to God's house."

If churches are Yahweh's house, does that mean he kept it when he divorced Asherah?

This must be a symbolic reference to "the temple" if those symbols are what they look like. I'm gonna have to look into that a bit more.

We sure have come a long way.

just look up at the tallest building and that's who has you by the gonads.

I may be securing my place in Hell, but the irreverent asshole in me has to point out the parallel to The Church here too (at one point, it may well have been someone in the church who had you by the gonads).

Shhhhh!
Don't ever let anyone know that it is a person in the church making the decisions and saying the book told them to do it.

Fantastic , I can see that you are talanted to shoose perfect shot. Respect

Thanks. I take hundreds of shots and choose a few. Lol

I think you bring up something very interesting that i never really thought of before !

The tallest buildings in the world now are all commercial buildings. Guess we have a new God now. MONEY??? I'd like to go back to that animistic religions and worship trees or other natural phenomena. Much more interesting and relevant to the average person. Thanks for these amazing photos!
