Time Travel 101: A Letter to My 20 Year Old Self - Noboxes EditionsteemCreated with Sketch.

in timetravel101 •  7 years ago  (edited)

I was fortunate enough to catch the post by @ericvancewalton the the other day. In this post, Time Travel 101, he presented a fabulous idea. Writing a letter to your younger self from today's perspective.

I've actually given it some thought, perhaps not enough, but here goes my attempt:

To my 20 year old self,

First of all, I expect this to be the first of many letters, so don't expect this first one to answer all of your questions. It's 28 years later and there are still several questions unanswered. Perhaps we can find some answers together amongst our correspondence.

You have recently married a wonderful woman ( still the smartest decision you've ever made). You should appreciate her more. She's your greatest partner in figuring out the answers.

This letter is reaching you while you're circumnavigating the globe on that monstrosity of a ship. What compelled you to join the Navy in the first place? I actually know the answer to that, and it would require too many pages of letter head to formulate your response. By the way, we don't use letter head anymore.

Actually, one of the many great things that come out of you joining the Navy, it kept you out of university. You'll be really happy about that later.

While on this sailing expedition, you've taken a stand not to drink. I commend you for that stand and holding to it. You'll augment that stand later.

I'm not going to tell you how many kids you'll have, I'll leave that one for the grand surprise that it will be. Ok, just for shear enjoyment on my part, you're up to two grand kids. Sorry, couldn't help myself.

You have no idea what's ahead young man, no idea. Actually, I find that to be a very good thing. You would avoid a lot of hurdles that have turned out to provide so much for so many. I know you, if you knew what was coming, you'd turn and run in the opposite direction. Don't avoid the hurdles, jump!

You'll have this gig for a few years where you travel a lot. You'll end up in New York City often. Look up a guy by the name of Eric Vance Walton, I'm pretty sure you could end up great friends.

You'll get involved into politics and current events ( aka mainstream news). Please don't, it's all bullshit! Later, you'll get into what they refer to as 'alternative news.' Please don't, it's all bullshit.

You're at that age where you haven't figured out that when you're 48 year old self is writing you letter and he tells you something is bullshit, you don't believe him. You should listen more.

You'll become fascinated with history and become a self proclaimed historian. Don't, it's all bullshit.

I'm sorry, did I happen to mention that politics, news and the text book history, it's all bullshit?

You're currently a 'member' of a group that gather every Sunday. You'll eventually figure out that you don't need a broker between you and your maker.

So, this is late November of your 20th year, that means you're in South East Asia. Trust me, it's the first of your many international travels. You'll eventually realize that there are no borders that make one man better than another. I encourage you to embrace that quicker. Say hi to the Russians in Thailand for me.

You'll eventually become much more open and accepting / tolerating of other's opinions. I encourage you to embrace that sooner as well, it will save you a lot of grief.

Oh, just a little thing, you're going to hear about this thing called 'the Internet' and eventually become involved. Become involved SOONER! Earn the label, 'early adopter' and own it. You'll understand later.

Well, I think we're off to a good start here. I hope this didn't tweak your melon too much.

I have a lot more to tell you, however, until the next letter, I'd like to leave you with an absolute truth. I must admit, I am still working to master this one myself: Love your neighbor as yourself. It will change the world!

Really loved this~

Also really enjoyed meeting you and the one shining gem of an example of your family in @gringalicious

I would really like to visit you and your family one day if you would appreciate that. I can see you have learned much wisdom and are continuing to evolve. I like that.

I hope to check out your posts more often when I am not so busy.

Blessings to you and yours~*~

You are always welcome to visit North Idaho. Spring and Summer are amazing. You have to be fond of the snow to enjoy the winter, which we do, thankfully.

Thank you for the kind words about @gringalicious. I am thankful for all of my children. My son in laws are pretty amazing as well.

I'm glad you enjoyed this post. I may, I should do a few more letters to round it out. There's a few things we figure out as we engage in this dance of life.

Blessing to you, yours and all of your efforts!

Yes while I wouldn't generally ant to spend all winter in the snow I do appreciate the cold/snow and quite enjoy some doses of it.

Yes I quite enjoyed the post because wisdom and learning are of the utmost importance. Always great to see what the most important lessons people learn in their life are. Also amazing how most intelligent people come to very similar conclusions.

Happy thanksgiving, I am sure you all have so much to be thankful for.

Blessings~*~

Wow, there are so many nuggets of wisdom here! I kind of feel like our vision just begins to clear in the fourth decade of our lives. Do you feel the same way?

You're currently a 'member' of a group that gather every Sunday. You'll eventually figure out that you don't need a broker between you and your maker.

^This is one of my many favorites. I really appreciate you taking the time to do this, my friend! Thanks!

Yes, Yes Yes!!!

That line got me too.

I second that, you should give it a go @exyle. In fact, a vlog where you're cooking, and talking to your 20 year old self, that would be amazing!!

You should give it a go, @exyle!

He is right, you don't need a broker between you and your maker, I couldn't agree more.
But for me, it's also important to go to 'the meeting on Sunday' because it's nice to be together for an hour or so with people who share your thoughts. It's a gift and a privilege to be able to go there.

Well, thank you for the kind words, Eric.

"I kind of feel like our vision just begins to clear in the fourth decade of our lives." Yes, I do agree, however I have some trepidations of the lessons ahead. I'm attempting to not be too confident.

Thanks again for this thought experiment. I'm very encouraged about this platform and this is just one example of what it can provide.

Hehe, iit would be great to tell the younger self of the bullshit to avoid!

Perhaps you should listen to Uncle Boom?

Lol, that might not work out so well!!

However, that would be a whole new level of humor!!

Haha and possibly jail time!

What a good letter to yourself with some wise words!

Thanks @yummyrum

As a revision therapy, acceptance and restart your letter is excellent. In fact, the idea is excellent, and I would love to rescue two of your phrases that mean a lot, because they are things that I would say to myself and to my two children already 20 years old: ..."Don't avoid the hurdles, jump!" and ..."You'll eventually realize that there are no borders that make one man better than another". Thanks for sharing @noboxes

I am thrilled that you enjoyed the letter and two of my statements stood out to you in particular. I hope that my letter is read by many and that it provides advice for the ages.

Thanks for sharing this here. It get us to know you better... and to take perspective of our own lives... Thank you.

Thanks @roxane. I know we discussed a few things in Lisbon. Maybe this can help put some of that into perspective?

Yes, it is :-) The discussion at Lisbon already did a lot ;-)

You're currently a 'member' of a group that gather every Sunday.

So like...a cult?
Nah, just kidding. I'm glad to say that I am very proud of the you that you abandoned and even prouder of the you that you are becoming.

"I'm glad to say that I am very proud of the you that you abandoned and even prouder of the you that you are becoming." What are you trying to do, make me tear up?!?!

¯_(ツ)_/¯

I do what I can.

Oh this is such a great idea. I wish I would have done this when I was younger. I am 50+ so I guess I can start at any time! I enjoyed your letter, self awareness and insight.

That is very kind of you @tesscooks4u. I'd love to read the letter you write. I'll be watching for it!

Hi noboxes, good contents !

thanks so much @amarlemagicien. Welcome to steemit!

An interesting thing to do. I wonder what I would tell my 20 year old self? I'll be 60 in a couple of months.

It was an interesting exercise indeed. I don't know that I'll write additional letters, but I do have a lot more I'd like to say. I hope you give it some thought and try it yourself. I am sure we could all learn something from you.

I love this thoughtfully written letter to your younger self! You have made me think about what words of wisdom I would write to my 20 yr old self. Oh my! That was a very long time ago. upped and steemed

Thanks so much @melinda010100. Credit goes to @ericvancewalton for having the courage to do it himself and then urge the rest of us to give it a try. Once I read his letter, my mind could not stop thinking about the idea. I may write more letters, to my 20 year old self. I have not given a lot of thought of what I would write to my 80 year old self, but I may in the not too distant future. I hope you give it a try as well

Great advice to someone of any age @noboxes. It's so cool that you're sharing this with the Steemian community!

I am glad you found this. I hope it shared some insight

This is wonderful. It occurs to me that this could be a really healing thing for people who feel remorse about their past, and forks in the road where they perhaps should have made the other choice. We can imagine going back and coaching our younger selves, and maybe forgive them for not always doing the right thing. Thanks for sharing this. It has me thinking!

Your last sentence is what I was hoping for, it has you thinking. I think it's a fabulous idea for a multitude of reasons. I hope you give it a try. Thanks so much for taking the time to give such a great comment, I appreciate it!

Excellent post!!

Thanks so much @ronaldsn

Nice pearls of wisdom to your 20 year old self. Two points really stand out for me.

you don't need a broker between you and your maker.

and

Love your neighbour as yourself. It will change the world

You really don't need to know much more than these two points to be happy.

Well, you have a good point, but perhaps an additional pearl or two would be helpful. Thanks for the great commenting @cecicastor

This is great!! So very thought provoking. Thank you for taking the time to write it.
