Tell Me A Story, Don't Lecture Me. - Fi
I love watching "experts" talk. My favorite things on tv are interviews and debates. They fascinate me.
Growing up, I remember I'll get so fascinated and ask my dad how these folks get to know all these things they talk about. Some people talk and you have no choice but to be glued to whatever they've got to say.
They grab and hold your attention for as long as they want. They're called eloquent speakers/writers but what makes them so special? What gives them these powers?
Too often, in our quest for success, we tend to take the well established path. Most times, these paths are always too old and outdated to make any significant impact in this ever changing world.
To succeed on here, I see many people take to "article writing". They pick a topic and start to state points and rules like they're "experts" in the field.
Whenever I see a post trying to sound like an authoritative voice, I check to see the author's credentials.
What amount of experience have you got to be able to talk about this topic so convincingly? If I can't find evidence that your points have made an impact in your life, I tend not to take you serious.
What Does This Mean?
It means you should talk only about topics you've experienced.
Now you don't have to be an "expert" in a field before you talk about it. All you need to do is have a personal experience and write your posts from that angle.
Storytelling is one act that has held us spellbound from generation to generation. It's in us to love stories.
Storytelling techniques are what the so called eloquent writers/speakers employ to keep us spellbound for as long as they pleased.
So the next time you want to write on a particular topic, think of what fresh perspective you'll be adding to the narrative.
What about you?
What type of posts do you enjoy reading?
Why do you think you enjoy them?
Who are your favorite blogs on Steemit?
Why aren't you writing the type of posts you enjoy reading?
If you, by any means, enjoyed this amateur attempt at sounding smart, consider upvoting and resteeming. You can also follow me for more.
Hello @fisteganos
I totally agree with you. My advice to young 👨 Steemians who just joined the platform is that, though you may be knowledgeable through vast reading you should learn to document instead of creating all the time. And the best Form of documentation is Story telling.
As a 23 year old you may leave a powerful rant or post on Steemit or even Instagram, there is a level of doubt that may come from it from those 👵 older than you. They will feel like "what do you know?" and your message will ended not having the intended effect.
#document, Don't always create.
Thanks Fi for this.

This seems like very solid advice. There is a cluster mentality with the more popular subjects, but it is nice to see some individual posts also.

I love reading about other people's stories. I like to compare them with mine and see how they dare to do things I would never do. It's like living those adventures with them but following the decisions they would make. It's basically being in a movie where you do not know what will happen but it excites you and you love being there.

I bet others feel the same way too. So hopefully you'll give them the experience they deserve!

It is true, great conversationalists are good storytellers. It takes time to get good at it though as practice makes perfect for those not used to telling stories to be able to put that attribute in their writing or become eloquent.

Yeah. First step is deciding to take this path then the rest is down to persistence and consistency. Many people don't want to think outside the box and stay persistent.

Best advice you can give to newbies on here! If you enjoy your posts, then eventually like minded people will too. Nicely put, my friend!

I feel, though you may enjoy the stories of others, a typical user couldn't care less about any strangers' life. A mixture of the two - stories and article writing - would be best.
For example, I lived with a pedophile for about 6 months, so I can write an informed article about pedophilia, but include that anecdote, no?
At the end of the day, I'm here to learn, so I read posts to learn, and I wrote posts to learn a bit more myself in the process, but also to teach what I've picked up.
But you're right that stories make a great read and a nice break from facebook-type posts, so I'm gonna include it more in the future!
