Claiming that such "higher risk tolerance" is for the common good -while it may have some truth as a free standing statement- misses the point, excuses their recklessness, and is some false Randian "Withheld Genius" Mythology building.
The current tragedy has far less to do with "invention" than with profit seeking. OceanGate and their CEO tried to maximize profit by skirting safety (as is evidenced by their litigation history, firing of safety experts, avoidance of certifications, and skirting of regulations) and have most likely paid the ultimate price.
Note especially that OceanGate did not seek ANY external certifications. In contrast, The DSV Limiting Factor (which as far as I know is the deepest diving submarine and far more sophisticated than OceanGate's Titan) sought and was commercially certified for unlimited full ocean depth operations by DNV GL (Det Norske Veritas Germanischer Lloyd).
