In the accident in which the 6.7-meter-long Titan submersible of the U.S.-based Ocean Gate Corporation disappeared during a tour of the sunken Titanic in the North Atlantic Ocean, U.S. Coast Guard officials announced at a press conference on April 22 that the submersible was crushed by water pressure, killing all five crewmembers. The recovery of the bodies and the submersible is expected to be difficult.

According to the New York Times, marine experts and former employees of the company warned five years ago that the strength and other durability issues of the Titan's forward looking window would lead to catastrophic problems.

　Five pieces of the main part of the Titan were found on the 22nd, approximately 490 meters away from the bow of the Titanic, which sank at a depth of approximately 3,800 meters. A senior official noted that the debris indicates that the ship was destructively crushed by the pressure from its surroundings.

Titan disappeared on the 18th, about 640 kilometers south of Newfoundland in eastern Canada. On April 22, a senior U.S. Navy official revealed that the U.S. Navy had detected what sounded like an explosion in the waters surrounding the site shortly after the Titan disappeared. The "strange noise" detected underwater on the 20th and 21st may have been unrelated to the Titan.

On board the Titan were the company's CEO, who was piloting the ship, a French man who is an expert on Titanic exploration, a British businessman, and two parents and their children, one of whom is from a wealthy Pakistani family and lives in the UK.
