Every day provides us with an opportunity to celebrate life. John Locke’s influential thinking plays a big part in our ability to celebrate life as we choose. His writings influenced America’s Founding Fathers as to the role of government and the rights of the people. John Locke viewed government as a social contract, whose main purpose was to ensure that the exercise of one’s individual rights did not harm the rights of another individual. He believed that we needed a government to provide rational rules to resolve the conflicts arising out of the exercise of individual rights. Today in honor of his birthday, I’m celebrating Individual Rights Day.

For those who wish to dive deeper into John Locke’s philosophy you can read his writings for free at Project Gutenberg.

Second Treatise of Government

THE PLIGHT FOR INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS

John Locke recognized the human plight,
and the need to fight for individual rights.

He opposed the divine right of kings,
yes, that really was a thing.

Monarchs ruled with an iron fist,
you spoke out at your own risk,

rules changed based on the king’s whim,
and the punishments could be grim.

Locke saw revolution,
as the solution.

He viewed government is a social contract,
for the people,, government was to act.

He believed in checks and balances,
to avoid placing power in palaces.

Our founding fathers read his thoughts,
and said “aha that’s the secret sauce!”

They told King George III to get lost,
they’d fight for their rights at any cost.

After the colonist had won,
a new job had begun,

a government for the people,
were everyone is treated equal.

While this theory is fine,
actual applications didn't align.

To this day equality for all,
is still a frequent rally call.
