Ossë was a Ainu spirit of the sea in the service of Ulmo. Ossë never went into the deep sea as Ulmo and he was fond of dwelling in the unpredictable tides of the coastline. When Arda was being shaped, Ossë was seduced by Melkor in exchange of the powers of Ulmo, this brought storms and ruin to the lands near the coast and the ships, his wife Aulë begged him to stop, but he never quite came back to the side of the light.
Ossë was responsible for the raising of the island that would be called Númenor. When Ossë grew restless in the Second Age, the mariners of Númenor would call for help from Uinen to quiet his storms.
