Why I Love Google Keep

in tools •  7 years ago

Today I learned that not everyone knows Google Keep, which could have lead to a terrible "Google's Best Kept Secret" pun, but let's not go there. Instead, I suddenly became afraid that it will become another product google abandons.

Is that likely? No. It's had hundreds of millions of Android installs, and was last updated last week. But it's such a great service that I think y'all need to be aware of it.

What does Keep do? It allows users to take notes and make lists. It's accessible on a browser and in an app, and the two sync pretty much immediately. For visual people, which I am not, you can give every note it's own color. You can pin notes, you can add collaborators. You can add a drawing or an image.

But mostly, you can take notes quickly, and you can have lists with checkboxes. That's all I need. A thing that takes notes quickly, and syncs so it's always accessible to me. If that's what you need to, and for some odd reason you don't know Keep, you should try it.

Oooh - I didn't know about this! I used to use their notebook app on my phone, but they quit updating it quite a while ago. I keep notes on all the silly things my son does so I'll never forget what he was like. This could be the perfect thing going forward, especially if I can put other things in there too.. Thanks for the heads up!

I've been an Evernote user for so many years 5+ at least. I'm very satisfied with their product. I'll probably stick with it.

Evernote is a great app, and is more feature rich, but it's a bit lumbering for the quick notetaking I do.

Some examples of things I use google keep for:
Checklist of tasks for a project
Keeping track of expected deliveries of all the stuff I buy online
Grocery lists - When at the supermarket check the stuff I have collected. Before I go, I go over the list of checked items and uncheck anything I need, which conveniently serves as a list of things to check for.
Keep track of shows that we watch and download.
Ideas for stuff to write for steemit.

Keep is almost perfect.
I missing some features like:

  • sub-pinpoints
    • without pressing space 666 times
  • folders for topics

What I really like is the goolge integration. I can send keep notes to calendar event, convert gdoc, etc.... but for me the GTD based and Nirvana works the better.

I've used it but I prefer any.do over Google keep because it has many features which Keep doesn't.

Wanderlist is also cool app.
