You remember the story by O. Henry titled, “The Gift of the Magi" about the hair comb and watch? It is a classic story where a couple, Jim and Della, sacrifice their greatest treasure for one another at Christmas time: Jim selling his watch to buy Della a comb for her beautiful long hair and Della cutting and selling her hair for a watch fob for Jim. The irony of the literature is they both sell the treasure the other one bought a gift for. What they don’t realize is they’ve given each other a greater gift — their sacrificial love. The lesson they ultimately learn is that their love for each other is worth more than all of the material possessions money can buy.
"Still Life with Bread Crumbs" is an incredible love story, with parallels to the "Gift of the Magi" but not a carbon-copy or clone of other love stories.
Rebecca is 60 years old. The story is the “equivalent of comfort food.” You easily glide through the pages with reassurance the story will be moving and powerfully satisfying. An elegant, not sappy, love story with humorous sidelines such as the time a friend related to Rebecca she loved snow globes and when others found out about her passion she ended up receiving snow globes as gifts for the rest of her life and ended up hating them.
“Rebecca Winter is a New Yorker and a photographer. She took some photos of the mess on her kitchen counter after her husband had brought home dinner guests unannounced (!!) and he then went to bed when it was time to clean up. These pictures sort of defined her marriage and later, after making her famous, defined Rebecca. Following her inevitable divorce, she lives on their proceeds, but now at 60 the money is running out and she is trying to continue paying for her mother's nursing home, her father’s rent and assisting her son.”
Her story is sandwiched between two generations, her sons and her parents. Lots of situations to relate too will engage you in reflecting positively on this heartwarming saga.
