Barney's Flower & Hummingbird Garden Jamaica

in tourism •  5 years ago

One place cats definitely aren't allowed in Negril is Barney's Flower & Hummingbird Garden.I had no choice but to visit the hummingbird sanctuary while on vacation and it didn't disappoint. While @donald.porter sat this one out, I was pleasantly surprised with the calm and cool surroundings.

The Red-Billed Streamer Tail, or locally known as the Doctorbird is Jamaica's national bird. Immediately after entering the garden we noticed this beauty guarding his territory. The picture was taken on a Canon EOS 60D with a photography lens.

You can see it's a peaceful place filled with all sorts of plants and flowers to attract the birds. There are water features and Barney proudly turns on the sprinklers which attracts the birds. Who would have guessed humming birds love the rain.

The entrance fee is $19 and Barney doesn't like crowds in his garden so book in advance. The best time to see the birds is in the mornings or afternoons when the sun is less strong. The coolest thing about this garden is that you can feed the hummingbirds.

Barney gave us some sugar water in a little bottle to feed the birds with. While attracting them takes a little bit of time, if the birds are hungry they will come and eat.

You can feed the birds too at Barney's Flower & Hummingbird Garden Jamaica, it's a unique experience and offers a nice break from the beach. While we aren't the most experienced with photographing birds, this is a great place to practice. The hummingbirds were buzzing around and often paused for photos.

How sweet....the only birds I've been successful at feeding are pigeons and chickens...seeing hummingbirds actually calm down to be fed must be really nice....lovely adventures man

Lol, yeah it's more satisfying feeding hummingbirds.

Great, that's "confidence", to be able to have that direct contact with the birds, and more with this restless specimen. Excellent place to have a feedback with nature.

The hummingbirds were far braver than I ;) The cool thing is Barney just made a business out of his yard and lets nature do the work.

That sounds like a really cool experience feeding hummingbirds, they are so tiny. I love nature and all it's creatures!! They are so tiny. I can see how having too many people at once would be stressful for the birds Thank you for sharing :)

Great unique post here cat. I wasn’t even aware of this habitat. Where exactly is this place located via Negril proper.
How big was the sanctuary grounds?
How did you get there?
What did it cost for travel there and back?
How many other people were there when you visited?
Wonderful photos.

It's about a 5-minute drive from Rick's Cafe (or the lighthouse) in West End. The grounds aren't very large, like a suburbian backyard (1/2 acre max.) A friend dropped us off but if you took a taxi it wouldn't be very expensive. It was just the two of us there and as we were leaving, six people showed up. I don't think he wants two groups there at once so book ahead.

Wow you can hand feed them too. I like the long tailed ones.

Apparently you can even get them to land on your fingers.
