The caribArt Project focuses on the bigger picture by immortalising traditional Caribbean life and culture through fineart works.
Why?
Because its dying faster than the few non-collective efforts being made are succeeding to preserve it.
How?
Caribbean culture and heritage spread has been based on the oral tradition. Colonialism and slavery made it a crime, punishable by death, for slaves to be taught to read and write. So, culture was passed on through stories, songs ( calypso) and word of mouth. However as western cultures invaded through the mass media and technology, and capitalism stretched its tentacles in small developing nations less and less young people became interested in traditional life and living. Opting instead for quick money through the drug trade and human trafficking. Simultaneously the older generations with the knowledge in their brains have passed and are passing away quickly and taking that knowledge with them to their graves.
Preservation Efforts?
Are limited to a few individual underfunded societies with limited scope and reach. Many depend on government funding but its difficult when there is rampant corruption and no political will.
So what do we do?
We write, we paint, we immortalise the old through our art and help to encourage others to do the same by making it ethical, practical, and viable to preserve cultural heritage through art.
What we need?
Your support - expertise, sales, donations, partnerships, sponsorships..... etc.
Once we have that, the sky is the limit!
