Şükür, Arapça'dan dilimize geçmiş olan bir kelimedir. Sözlükte, "nimeti göstermek ve açığa çıkarmak" anlamına gelir. "Nimeti unutmak, üzerini örtmek ve gizlemek anlamına gelen, küfür kelimesinin zıddıdır.(1)
Örneğin: "دابة شكور" = "şükreden hayvan" tabiri şu anlama gelir: "Sahibi kendisine yem ve saman ihsan eder etmez kısa süre içinde semirtmesiyle, yediği yemi ve samanı vücudunda açığa çıkaran binek hayvanı."(1)
Mesela; dibi çapalanan, gübresi verilen, zamanında budanan ve sulanan ağacın daha iyi meyve vermesi, çiftçinin ona vermiş olduğu emeğin şükrüdür. Yemi verilen ve iyi bakılan tavuğun her gün yumurtlaması, sahibine olan şükrünü ifade eder.
Buraya kadar sanırım kavramın anlamı anlaşılmıştır. Şükür kavramı, verilen nimetlere sadece dil ile "şükür" demek değildir. Verilen nimetlere karşılık olarak bizimde gereken yerlere maddi olarak verebildiğimizi vermemiz demektir.
Büyüklerimizin, komşunun gönderdiği yemek veya meyve tabağını geri boş göndermemesi, evinde ne varsa imkanı ne kadarsa tabağa bir şeyler koyup göndermesi, şükür kavramını ne kadar iyi anladıklarının göstergesidir.
