Ayrıca gökyüzünden yansıyan renk kısmende olsa bir role sahiptir. Bulutlu günlerde deniz rengi daha soluktur. Yalnız görünen ışığın tamamı su yüzeyinden yansımamaktadır ve ışığın bir bölümü yüzeyin alt kısmından gelir. Su ne kadar bulanık olursa o kadar fazla renk yansıtacaktır. Denizler veya göller yoğun bir su yosunu ve mikroskobik bitkiler barındırır. Nehirler ve göletler ise toprak ve katı asıltılar bulundurur. Bu oluşumlar su yüzeyine geri dönen ışığı dağıtarak renklerde çok büyük değişikliklere sebep olurlar.
