İngilizlerin ülkemiz için söylediği "Turkey" ismi nereden geldiğini hep merak etmiştim.Hatta çoğu zaman yabancıların ülkemizin adıyla dalga geçmesi rahatsız etmiştir.Anadolu lisesi hazırlıkta ingilizce öğrenmeye başladığımızda öğrenmiştik .Turkey anlamı ingilizcede Hindi demekmiş.O zaman ki öğretmenimiz Turkey ismini değil Turkiye adını kullanalım uluslararası arena da Turkiye isminin kullanılmasını sağlayalım diye milliyetçi bir şey söylediğini hatırlıyorum.Sanırım bu konuda başarılı olamadık çünkü bunu söylediğinde 1990 dı.28 yıl geçmiş halihazırda Turkey ismi kullanılıyor.Bu bizim Mısır yerine Egypt demek gibi.
Aslında bu konuda biraz araştırma yaptım.Şu anda söyleyeceklerim tamamen benim araştrmalarım sonucundadır.Kesin böyledir diyemiyorum ama bana mantıklı geldi.İngilizler Amerika kıtasına ayak bastıkları zaman Avrupa Kıtasında bulunmayan bir çok yeni bitki bir çok yeni hayvanlada karşılaşmışlardı.Bu hayvanlarda biri de Hindiydi. Özellikle Kızıldereliler hindiyi evcil hayvan olarak yetiştiriyorlardı.Bu hayvanı gören İngilizler ismini öğrenmeye çalışmışlar Fransız bu hayvana benzeyen bir tavuğu Anadolu da gördüklerini söylemeleri üzerine Turkey Chicken adıyla anılmaya başlamışlar daha sonra da bu isim uzun olduğu için hindiye kısaca Turkey demeye başlamışlardır.Kısaca hindi ismini Turkiyeden almıştır.Turkey ise Turklerin yaşadığı yer anlamındadır.
Burada Beç diğer adıyla Tokat tavuğu diye adlandırılan tavuk görülmektedir.Bu tavuğu hindiye benzetmişlerdir.
