The ancient city of Ephesus

The ancient city of Ephesus, which dates back to 6000 BC, has been an ancient city of Rome, Greece and Turks at different times. This extraordinary work, which contains artifacts such as the Temple of Artemis, the House of Virgin Mary and the Ashab-i Kehf, is located in the Selçuk district of Izmir and is one of the most important tourist destinations in Turkey. Ephesus, Hellenistic and Roman periods of the most brilliant times. At the time of the Roman emperor Augustus, the population of Asia Province reached 200,000.

At the same time Ephesus was an important port city. This feature enabled Ephesus to become an important trade and political center at the time. In 2015 ,Ephesus was included to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The largest temple of Artemis, which is based on the ancient goddess tradition of Anatolia, is also located in Ephesus. Having a very important place in history and today, Ephesus has produced famous names such as Herakleitos, Artemidoros, Hipponaks, Zenodotos and Soranos.

Ephesus is located in the Selçuk district of Izmir. It is one of the first tourist attractions that come to mind in Aegean. It has come up from the Ancient Greeks to daylight. It was under the rule of the Roman Empire before it was now i the todays Turkey.

It is thought that Ephesus have been founded by female warriors at that time. These female warriors are known as "Amazon". The ancient city of Ephesus is thought to have a history of about 8 thousand years. Ephesus Antique City is one of the most important examples of Polished Stone Age. It is a rare masterpiece that comes up to the day.

One of the most striking features of Ephesus is the intersection of all streets and streets at right angles. The founder of this architecture is Hippodamos and this architecture is called "Grid Plan". Ephesus, one of the most developed cities in the world during its period, was built and adorned with high technology and skillful marble works according to the current circumstances. He was also the capital of Asia. The population at that time is estimated to be about two hundred thousand. It is an incredibly crowded influenza according to the circumstances of time.

But after a while Ephesus was a great misfortune. Ephesus Harbor, which has the biggest share in the enrichment of the city, started to fill up and lost its port feature. And this situation has slowed down trade. Emperor Hadrian, who wanted to prevent this crisis, re-empted the harbor several times. But the bad progress has not prevented it. Ephesus has thus lost both its port and become a city far from the sea. Later, in 1330, the city of Ephesus was in the hands of the Turks.

At the entrance of Hadrian's Temple in Ephesus there is an inscription about the legend of the establishment of Ephesus. In that inscription are the following sentences:

"Androklos, the brave son of Kodros king of Athens, wants to discover the opposite side of the Aegean. First, he consults the priests of the Temple of Apollo in Delphi. The heroes tell him that he will make a city where the fish and the pig sign. Androklos sails into the dark blue waters of the Aegean while considering the meaning of these words. They decide to land as they come to the bay in the mouth of Kaystros (Little Menderes) River. When they cook the fish they keep burning fire, a boar that escapes through the shrubs escapes by grabbing the fish. Here is the prophecy. They decide to build a city here."

The remains of Ephesus, which have been up to date, still exist in a region of 8-9 kilometers. Every year, about 1.5 million tourists from various parts of the world visit Ephesus.

Some of the world famous works of Ephesus are; Artemis Temple, Celsius Library, Virgin Mary House, Seven Sleepers (Ashab - i Kehf), Isa Bey Mosque, Hadrian Temple, Domitian Temple, Serapis Temple, Mary Church, St. Mary 's Church. Mateus Gate, Monumental Fountain, Trajan's Fountain, Heroon, Slope Houses, Grand Theater (The Gate), Gymnasium, Heracles Gate, Mazeus Mitridatis Gate, Marble Street, Domitianus Square, , Palace Building, Stadium and Gymnasium, Theater Gymnasium, Harbor Bath, Port Gymnasium, St John's Castle.

@turkish-trail güzel post olmus eline sağlık. oraların hepsini gezdim ben de. efes'i, meryem ana kilisesi'ni, selçuk'u, sirince'yi isa bey caminin olduğu tepeyi filan. gerçekten gezilip görülmesi gereken yerler özellikle o efes müzesi insanı hayrete düsürecek güzellikte.
