Namık İsmail was born in Samsun in 1890 as an intermediary of three children of a Circassian family who migrated from the Caucasus to Samsun and then to Istanbul. The three siblings are interested in art since the young age, perhaps because their father is a calligrapher.
In some sources, the name of the artist is Yeğenoğlu, and in some sources it is referred to as Sebük. Yeğenoğlu surname originates from Yeğenzade, the artist's family nickname. Sebük is the surname that the artist has taken with the surname law. But the artist did not use both, his paintings signed as Namık İsmail.
