traffic-koans

It was pollination season, and every bee perched on their own flower. No bee can ever share a flower, so it was a race get your own.

Once a bee had its fill, it would leave and another would take its place.

One particular bee had its eye on a flower for quite some time. It waited while the current bee was latched to it. Once the previous bee was done, it excitedly fluttered its wings toward the flower.

Suddenly, out of nowhere, another bee grabbed its spot. It sapped the flower of its remaining pollen and departed.

Dejected, the bee tried to suck what little remained.

The bee that perched out of turn flew happily, up until it was eaten by a bird.

Imagine you've waited your whole life, working your way up from the bottom, and then someone comes along and steals that something you've working so hard for, just because they were in the right place at the right time. Oh wait, we're talking about parking spots. People who steal parking spaces are the worst.

Everyone wants to get a spot quickly, and while people are lucky enough to stumble upon one ahead of others waiting longer but are farther away, those who speed up and blatantly steal a spot are a special variety of scumbag. While I haven't been involved with these kinds of disputes, I have witnessed quite a few firsthand. One such instance happened on a rainy day, and we were in a queue of cars circling a covered parking lot hoping to be lucky enough to stumble upon a slot.

You would think that sorting it out would be simple, since whoever gets lucky enough to chance upon a leaving car would be able to get the slot. I assure you, I wouldn't be sharing this story if it was just that simple. We circled the lot about six times when suddenly a car signalled out. I was third in line to get to that spot, so I knew I would wait my turn. But then, the line stopped moving and after a few minutes, several people converged on that location.

It turns out, a representative of the car directly in front of me got out and stood at the spot, refusing to the yield to the car in front of them, which was the rightful car to grab that spot. Shouting ensued, and they needed several security guards to sort out the mess. At that time, I thought it was some next level assholery asking a young girl (I'm not sure how young she was) to stand in the spot and tell the rightful car to find a spot elsewhere. It was great entertainment, for sure.

As the dispute was happening, I saw another nearby car departing, so I broke off the line and gently crawled towards the space. After all, if the car ahead of me didn't want to take it, then I was the rightful car to get that slot. We parked without any hassle, without any dispute. And that, my friends, is patience paying off. (Or, karma slapping you in the face, depending on which perspective you're referring to).

Ever had a parking slot stolen from you? Tell your tale and get a chance to win some sweet, sweet SBD :D

I'm trying to think if this has ever happened to me around Christmas time which is the only time I ever get caught in psychotic drivers physically fighting for parking spots but no, I tend to avoid the shops at Christmas time and when I'm forced to go for whatever reason I park in the middle of bfn where there's no problems because everyone wants to park directly outside the door XD

I usually go in the middle of the day when everyone with a life stuck in the grind that has a real job or is at school is at that particular thing so the crowds are much less and I can park where I like XD Also helps that I live out in the suburbs, I can't even cope with my city and it's not what anyone would class as particularly large D:

Something about the cold weather that makes tempers flare up more quickly? Or maybe it's because everyone wants to get ahead of everyone else in terms of shopping haha It's comforting to know that we share the same sentiment about the city. They can have their rush-everything mentality haha!

Thanks for stopping by, mate :D

Tis the season XD And everyone probably wants to park on the door because it's hot and they'll be carting out tonnes of shopping.

Maybe it's just the sheer volume of people in a city that gives it that vibe. Some people love it. Me not so much!

Nothing that compassion can't fix. Too bad people are too bus with their own stuff to think about others.

I have heard of people saying they love it. In my poetry, I have only said I love the city when it's nighttime and there are no people. I could walk the streets alone until the sun came up haha!

Someone stole my space on Monday!!!!

At hospital no less, taking the good lady in for a final check up and the car park was full. I saw a couple walking towards their parked car and parked along a bit and stuck my indicator on to show I was going into that space once vacated.

As they pulled out another little car roared in and blocked my way before parking in the space. Given that the good lady and the little lady were both in the car I couldn't scream blue murder out of the window and instead had to glare at the couple as they walked away from the car.

There isn't a lot worse than a space stealer. Well, ok. There are lots worse. You know what I mean though!

What the!! The nerve on that guy! And just when I'm writing the Traffic Koans too! Those basturts!

Drivers with pesky little cars are almost always the perpetrators for some reason. They both must have the clap that's why they're itching to get the space so that they could have their nethers looked at. Maybe that's why the doctors say never to stick or be stuck by something unclean.

There's a special place in hell for space stealers for sure. Rather... a spatial place in hell.

Aha!!!! Oh yes!! A spatial place!! Oh I like that very much!!

They will pay there, every hour!!

Oh yes of course, they will pay and it will not be tax-deductible. That would be the real hell!!

I hate waiting behind the guy who is blocking the lane as he waits for someone to vacate a space. And making it worse is when the person vacating the space is taking their time about it.

So I guess the person whose really at fault here is the one vacating the space. It sucks when there's no room to overtake and move on, but yeah it's hard to blame the person who's waiting, especially if he's in the right position. Hard to risk moving on and looking for a different spance. I do understand your frustration with it though, man.

Argh!! Yes! This is definitely a pet peeve. I was trying to reverse into a spot the other day, and had to wait for the oncoming cars to pass so I could reverse in safely. The car behind me nipped into my spot!!

I had to drive off with my tail between my legs...

I wanted to get out and scream and shout at the guy, but it clearly wouldn't have done anything. And anyway, I would have needed to go and find another parking spot before I could do this haha!

Gahh!!! I really hate those kinds of drivers!!! I bet they don't even know how to reverse properly!! GRR!! This really makes my blood boil!

You know what I would've done? I bet he hasn't slotted in properly because he was rushing. I would block him from being able to maneuver properly. He'll honk and cause a scene or he'll just keep it the way it is. In any case, if he leaves his car in a bad position, he's going to hear from the cars parked beside him.

Those cars really deserve to be scratched with a key. Special place in hell for them, I tell you!!

This is a nice one. This summer, after I disagreed with the neighbor of my mother, he stole my usual parking lot where I usually park for a quick visit and is alloted for visitors (otherwise I park on my mother's parking lot). Of course, there was shadow on the parking lots alloted for visitors and on his alloted parking lot wasn't in this year's hot summer. For whole summer he and his wife, and another neighbor who sided with him occupied all the parking lots for visitors due to the dispute, and theirs which were behind the barrier were waiting empty and no one was able to park.
But, guess what? That particular neighbor already punched a hole in the house fronting because he does not wants to wear glasses.

Ouch! Those petty people really gets what's coming to them. I have sort of the same thing, but with my fiancee's neighbor. They keep parking in front of my fiancee's house, leaving me to park far away. Whenever I get the chance, I park on their spot and leave no room for their other car to park. Suffice to say, it wasn't a pleasant experience for everyone.

Thanks for sharing your tale and for continually resteeming this series, my friend!

Special level of scumbaggery indeed! Yes, now this has happened to me more times than I can count. So many times in fact, that I've wondered if the etiquette is not whoever happens to be lucky enough to chance on the spot of a leaving car, but instead whoever is willing to run down grandmother's and small children in order to get it.

In the most recent example my mom was driving. We were at the mall and had circled the parking lot a number of times when finally we saw someone was about to leave and no other cars were in the lane so it was ours for sure. The car backed out and just before we could pull in a sports car came flying around the corner and cut my mom off. Now mom is generally pretty patient, but even she was perturbed by the blatant selfishness of the driver and gave him a small beep of dissatisfaction--and he responded by giving her the finger!! Can you imagine some young punk treating my mom that way?? Well I was quite pissy about it and as we drove past I told mom to stop for a sec and rolled down my window to say something scathing, but before I could get a word out the person in the vehicle next to him swung open their car door and slammed it into the passenger door of his vehicle. Next thing we knew the jerk was shouting at the man about a new paint job--and here comes the sweet revenge. I shouted excuse me, they both looked over and I said "I saw everything, he was opening his car door when you sped into that space, so you're the one at fault." The asshole started sputtering that wasn't what happened and I gave my best innocent face as I said:
*'Well that's what I saw so if you want to involve the police and insurance I'll be happy to give a statement. '
Needless to say the jackass stormed off. The owner of the other car however, seemed a bit uncomfortable, started telling me that he was in fact at fault- I interrupted him and said, "The creep stole our parking spot and gave my mom the finger'. The guy took one look at my elderly mom and said, "Well come to think of it, I think it did happen exactly as you said!" We shared a conspiratorial grin and I remember thinking that was the fastest case of karma I have ever seen!!

OH NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!! NOBODY DOES THAT TO MAMA DREEMIT!! Apart from what already transpired, I'm willing to the universe that that jerk would suffer a flat tire. Whether he's parked or going 120kph when that happens, it's all up to the universe.

That car door opening, funny you should mention that as it's the topic of tomorrow's koan!! I don't know why but you always comment ahead hahaha!! Must be our synced thinking still acting up. Serves that jerk right! Oh I love the turn of events! It's really awesome when what happens is stranger than fiction! It's great that you stuck around to deliver that coup de grace!

One of the best karma stories I've heard in recent memory! Thanks for sharing it here :D
