No matter what city you live in, or what suburb you live in to get to work within a city I am sure you are experiencing ridiculous travel times and gridlock. Many cities are spending millions ( if not billions) of dollars for infrastructure to try and circumvent or lighten the load for commuters namely by planning new transit systems.
In case it's not already obvious enough, if you look at your city skyline it is peppered with a boatload of office towers, many of these towers contain employees that sit within cubicles and at a computer which is connected to the internet, and most likely (almost certainly) a VPN server which could be connected to remotely from anywhere on the planet, including one's own residence.
In Toronto it is estimated (very conserative estimate)that there are over 100,000 commuters daily and only 23% of those commuters use public transit which is to say there are roughly 75,000 vehicles traveling in and then out of the city on a daily basis and most of them work within a cubicle at an office tower.
Also in Toronto there is a shortage of housing, the only solution seems to be to build more residential towers which perpetuates the strain on the daily commute, transit and infrastructure.
Might I suggest the obvious? If 75000 commuters were off the road then gridlock would be greatly reduced without having to spend millions or billions of dollars on new infrastructure. Some would say it would be devastating to the local businesses or the office lease markets but I say these office Towers could be easily converted into residential towers of which people could work from remotely without the need to drive anywhere.
Corporate overlords are a thing of the past, quite simply if one does not produce results while in a traditional office or working remotely there is no difference at all, you either produce or you don't and there is no reason why one needs to drive to and fro on a daily basis and spend many hours of their life in gridlock.
Many corporations claim they are innovators and at the leading edge of technology, but they cannot seem to grasp the most obviuos of effeciencies, a stress free and happy worker is a productive worker. Many corporations state they are "Green" but in reality are the most responsible for "un-green" practices. A hamster wheel is a hamster wheel no matter its location, stop making the hamster work to go to work and by doing so a more productive city will arise.
