March 31st: International Transgender Day of Visibility

in transgender •  7 years ago

Every 31st day of March, we celebrate the International Transgender Day of Visibility.

Contrasting Transgender Day of Remembrance (November 20th), this is not a day for grief, but more of a day dedicated to celebrate transgender people and all of their accomplishments so far.  This is a day of self-reflection and humanity, in which we remeber that together we can make this world a safer, more inclusive one.

If you’re trans, I invite you to show the world how awesome you are just by being yourself!

If, like myself, you aren’t identified as trans, but you want to show your support, do it! Become an ally, be constructive, educate yourself, and defy transphobia.

Today, we take another step forward to changing for the best, showing we’ve had enough discrimination and hate for an entire lifetime.

Today, we let everyone know it is okay to be trans, and we make sure everyone we can reach understands that trans people do exist and deserve to be recognized and seen.

"It wasn’t until the last few years that I began to realize that someone like me can have a place in our politics. You see, as a transgender girl, growing up I didn’t see anyone like me in the history books I read or serving in public office." -Stella Keating, for Teen Vogue

Visibility is important because it makes us aware! We have transgender people in our science labs, in our senate, in our TV’s, magazines and books, and if you ask me, that’s a wonderful inspiration for our trans children. Now they know they’re not alone, and they can look up to someone who is like them.

Today was world changing, maybe for hundreds of thousands, or maybe for one kid who just realized they’re not broken. World changing.

Increased visibility is vital, not only because it can inspire people and break barriers, but it can also help bring transgender issues to the conversation, with the objective of understanding and solving them.

On this event, we acknowledge, validate and celebrate the transgender identity; we embrace who we and our loved ones are and we take the chance to raise awareness focusing on all the positive and good things inside the trans community, and we all share the same feeling of empowerment and optimism for all the victories upcoming!
