In the Binhai New Area of Tianjin, there is an ocean museum that stands as the only national-level comprehensive marine museum in China, integrating collection, exhibition, research, and education. Covering an area of 15 hectares, the museum has a building area of 80,000 square meters and an exhibition area of 23,000 square meters.
The main structure consists of the museum has three floors, with some areas extending to four floors. The exhibits are themed around "Ocean and Humanity," and are divided into three major sections: "Marine Humanities," "Marine Nature," and "Marine Ecology." It features six exhibition zones and 15 galleries in total. Additionally, the museum offers public service facilities such as a museum shop, restaurant, café, and cinema. It is the first national-level comprehensive and public-interest marine museum in China.
The museum houses a replica of a Song Dynasty Chinese boat, sometimes named Fujian Boat. This is a large wooden sailing vessel powered by wind, originating from the coastal areas of Fujian, China, during the Song Dynasty. It was a significant tool for Chinese ancestors to explore the oceans. In the early 15th century, the renowned Chinese navigator Zheng He utilized these boats for his seven expeditions to the overseas area, reaching as far as the east coast of Africa..
The displayed boat is 27.8 meters in length, 8.6 meters in width, with a draft of 3.4 meters at the waterline and a depth of 2.36 meters down by the waterline. The side of the ship features cross-sections of sealed cabins and cargo holds, accurately showcasing the ingenuity of our ancestors.
The exhibition hall contains many meticulously crafted models of animals, plants, and geological structures, as well as some instruments that simulate the occurrence of geological disasters, all of which are worth a look. Admission to the museum is free, but you need to book tickets in advance through the official WeChat account. There are also some paid attractions inside the museum, but I personally don't find them interesting and don't recommend spending money on them. Outside the museum, at the harbor, there is a decommissioned Chinese naval frigate that interested visitors can go to see; the ticket price is about 6 US dollars.
The first floor of the museum has a simple restaurant serving American fast food and pasta. However, both the quality and price of the food here are not satisfactory. I bought this spicy beef with black pepper pasta ,but the kitchen just heated it from microwave , it`s the prefabricated food, and the priced at 7USD, which was just edible and recommended. I suggest you bring your own food, as the visiting time won't be too long. There's also a seafood restaurant that I didn't enter, but I recommend going to the city center for seafood. Taxi drivers in Tianjin are very friendly and they will tell you where to find the best food.
Exiting the museum and heading southeast for about 4 kilometers, you will arrive at a place called Guanlan Cape Park. In the winter, around 5 pm, you can witness the sunset from the west, which is a magnificent sight.
The park, situated near the sea, offers a prime location for appreciating winter scenery. As the sun dips below the horizon, it casts a golden glow on the water, creating a warm and serene atmosphere. At this moment, you might feel a sense of tranquility, with the calm of the season and the harmony of nature merging together. Watching such a scene is undoubtedly a rare beauty and comfort in the winter months.
