Back to the future part 12 - My travels - Perhentian islands

A look back through my travel photos from before Steemit

This was just around the corner from where we stayed on the smaller of the Perhentian islands in Malaysia - Kecile.

This idlylic little island is the perfect place to just chill in your hammock and watch the world go by, and that's exactly what we did for around 5 days and nights. The people here were extremely friendly and I had
great craic with the locals playing what can only be described as foot volleyball. It was great craic, and I learned that this is actually an official sport popular here and in Indonesia.

It is called Sepak Raga - which translates as kick volleyball - the sport is native to Southeast Asia. Sepak takraw differs from the similar sport of footvolley in its use of a rattan ball and only allowing players to use their feet,
knee, chest and head to touch the ball. The heavy rattan ball took some getting used to for my soft feet, but by the last day, I was pretty good and some great games with the local lads.

They have different names for it in each South East Asian country. In Indonesia the game is called sepak takraw. In Thailand, it is called takraw. In Laos, it is kataw. In Myanmar it is known as chin lone, and
is considered more of an art as there is often no opposing team, and the point is to keep the ball aloft gracefully and interestingly. In the Philippines, besides "takraw" it is also known as sipa, meaning
"kick".

I traveled around South East Asia and Australia back in 2007/2008 with my then girlfriend/now wife.

It was a trip of a lifetime and I loved every minute of it.

I am going to upload a photo every day.

I'll upload another one tomorrow.

Peace Out
