Singapore's food centre chope culture

Dear steemit friends,

Today I want to share something interesting about Singapore culture .

I got an idea to write this post because last month I met someone who recently arrived to Singapore from Indonesia to work.

As usual , during lunch time , the food center was packed and lots of people are waiting to buy the food at each individual food store. So I find an empty seat and left my water bottle there..

In Singapore, if a table has something, that means someone has already reserved hence you should sit on the other table . If u didn’t , you will get stares or people will even get angry at you. There are even few cases where people even fight because of this .

After I bought my food, I saw someone is already there . I don’t mind since I’m alone . When I reach out for my water bottle , he sensed sth and talked to me whether I reserve this table. I explained him in the future , he should get another table if there is sth like tissue or umbrella etc on the table. Athough it’s not very nice to do like this since all tables are public and people can sit where they want . But it’s something that you should aware of it if you are visiting Singapore .

We recently move to a new work building and today we find a sticker on the table on our canteen .

No chope

The term Chope is The act of reserving your place.( widely used in Singapore or Malaysia)

Since people like to reserve seats by using tissue packets, umbrellas and other items .

I really love my new work place canteen.

It’s so huge with comfortable seating area with lots of plants ..

What do you think of this culture ? Do you think is it rude or acceptable?

Although I personally think it’s rude but at the same it’s also convenient if you are alone as during lunch time, there were hardly any seats left Do you think I should stop doing chopping the seats?

That’s interesting.. I’m not sure if it’s rude or not, but it’s definitely much different than here in the US. Great blog as always :)

Thank u . Yes it’s something different for sure.

Nahh, it only depends. Like if this is the tradition already, we should follow it. In this manner, we can gain respect to everybody. Anyways, Singapore is very nice. I still even have my souvenir money when I was there. Thanks for sharing this. <3

thank you for reading.. yes it's a very nice country.. there are many filipinos here. :D

But I like most in Swrizerland, they value humanity the most. Just for an example, if they will see someone will be crossing on the pedestrians, they will just slowly stopping. :-) Looking forward for your next adventure. :-)

So I find an empty seat and left my water bottle there..

hahaha... this is pretty much the same as what I did during my study in Taiwan. But I did it because I just want to tell other people that I will come back to the seat with my pientang or lunch box or my drink. I did'nt realize it become a culture in Singapore and Malaysia.

In my opinion, it is OK put something to the seat that we wanted to sit. But to be honest I never saw people fighting because of .. what is the term? Choping. It is quite interesting to know. ^_^

I have heard about TAiwan, but in singapore, it's serious level.. just joking. Thank you.

^^ I see... But thanks because you bring one culture about singapore that I din't pay much attention about it. This is good example to tell my students too. ^^

I personally think okay with the No Chope stickers. Based on the pictures you shared, I see that not all table has the stickers, so that means there are some tables that are allowed to chope then? 🤔

But if all tables are put the No Chope stickers on it, that's rude! If customers go to the toilet and leave table for moment, the customer has to bring all their stuff into the toilet?

Yes right now all tables has sticker .. I Guess someone has to look after ur items.. hehe

Incredible ideas you can use elsewhere

I was talking about this with my Filipino colleagues and he was saying if you put umbrella etc , ppl will just take .. hehe .. I wouldn’t want to try in other country though..

We practise the same way in Romania, we leave something on the table. I agree with you it's kinda rude...

really? did it ever got lost ? I am scared to try it in other country. haha

singapore a developed and developing country and also deserve them to do things like so different from us indonesia that have the customs of polite and gentle culture maybe it is because the influence of the many islands that surround so cold is always not rude. hehe

I like ur comment , so cold is Not always rude.

I read your post, as if I can not wait to play and enjoy the beauty of singapore city, what else do you meet people Indonesia. congratulations to enjoy my friends, may the relationship with Indonesian people closer.

Oh thanks for the wishes

I hope we can continue to be friends through the media steemit, even greater hope can meet in a moment. I do not know when....

I think whether or not a country depends on its people. I know Singapore is more advanced than Indonesia. I love the culture and discipline of Singaporean people. Thank you for sharing this, There is a new lesson for me Although I have not been to Singapore yet. Your post took me to Singapore. ha ha

It’s good that u feel u learn something today from my post.

hehe chop chop! I tend to avoid 'chope'ing altogether by visiting at hours where there would be no one at all ahaha.
Anyway, your workplace canteen looks really new and clean. I hope the food isn't too bad/ or expensive!

It’s actually good idea.. I do often eat late lunch.. the food and the price are okay I Guess..

Wow Nice
