The first leg of the journey was a 147km drive to the centre of Sri Lanka. We were heading to a tourist hotspot called Sigiria Rock. The drive took us along some quiet roads passing through small towns and villages. One of our main worries was the risk of running out of fuel or trying to find food. Most towns have large petrol stations located at either end of the main highstreets and it doesn’t matter how small the village is there is always somewhere to get tasty food.
We were also concerned about rain. Little did we know we decided to travel in monsoon season so random outbreaks of heavy rain where frequent but passed quickly. The tuk tuk was fitted with two rain jacket style sides which rolled down from the roof and zipped to the sides. Despite its basic look, it worked well.
On arriving at Sigiria you drive down a long tree lined driveway which winds its way around the outside of the mote. We parked up and bought our ticket which allows you access to the museum and the rock palace. I would say don’t go to the museum as it’s a bit half assed and slightly confusing.
We handed our tickets in and headed up the rock. The first section is flat and full of hidden ruins, you should make time to explore this area as it’s not so overrun with tourist.
The steps up to the top of the rock are step and slippery. Once you’re passed the spiral stairs and the mirror wall you’re then greeted by the lions feet. If you don’t have a head for heights you may want to call it a day here.
The steps are a little sketchy as the metal sheets which bend and flex under your feet. You start to tighten your grip on the hand rails. Once you’re on top of the rock you’re greeted by a vast array of ruins and ponds. It’s worth taking the time to explore every corner of the palace. The views from the top are truly breath taking.
Thanks for reading, this is only my second post so any top tips are very much appreciated. I will be uploading part 3 soon.
