Cologne Cathedral, listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List
The construction of this cathedral began in 1248, and the works lasted for 600 years, but this place of worship of the Virgin Mary and the Holy Apostle Peter eventually became one of the most beautiful ecclesiastical edifices in the world. A true symbol of Gothic architecture, the Cologne Cathedral, or the Dome of Cologne, was designed to preserve some very important symbols of Christianity: the relics belonging to the three wise men who worshiped Christ at Bethlehem and brought them gold, myrrh and incense. Cologne's medieval builders have designed an impressive structure for such a mission: the cathedral is the largest Gothic church in northern Europe, and has two 157-meter-high towers that go beyond any church in the world in terms of the size of its facade.
The Brandenburg Gate, Berlin
No other monument in Germany is as famous as the Brandenburg Gate, built between 1789 and 1791 under the command of Wilhelm II and CG Langhans', plans in the heart of Berlin in Pariser Platz. The Brandenburg Gate - German Gate - was designed to be a symbol of peace, but it did not prevent it from a rather tumultuous fate, the Quadriga who climbs at a height of 28 meters being transported to Paris from the order of Napoleon. It returned then from Paris in 1914, when the olive-ridge from Victoria's hand was replaced with a cross. Then the Brandenburg Gate was used as a symbol by the Nazis, and after the division of Berlin, it was found right on the border between East Berlin and West Berlin in the Russian sector. After the Berlin Wall was built in 1961, the Brandenburg Gate became impassable for 28 years. Today, the monumental Brandenburg Gate is both a symbol of Germany's reunification and a tourist attraction not missed by anyone visiting Germany's capital. The Brandenburg Gate is supported by six Doric columns, forming five passages, with only pedestrian access. The famous Bronze Quadriga, representing the goddess Victoria, riding a four-horse carriage in 1794. The Brandenburg Gate was built after the Propylaea, the access gate to the Acropolis in Athens.
Berlin's Wall
From 1961 to 1989, the Berlin Wall - Berliner Mauer - divided the city and all Germany into two. Most of this concrete structure no longer exists today, but the remaining fragments are a distinct feature of the city. Today there is a route for pedestrians and cyclists divided into 14 sections, which follow the route of the former impassable wall of for those in East Germany and information panels installed in 30 points tell the story of the Berlin Wall.
The Rhine Valley and Lorelei's Rock
The Rhine Valley, but especially the middle course of the Rhine (Mittelrhein), is one of Germany's top destinations. This is because, in a special natural setting, there is not only a wine-growing area introduced in the "Wine Route" German version, but above all, more medieval castles and palaces. The Middle Rhine course, with a length of 65 kilometers (the geographical region between Bingen am Rhein, Rüdesheim am Rhein and Bonn) was introduced into the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002. Along with old fortresses such as Pfalzgrafenstein, Katz, Maus is also the famous rock of Lorelei, the melancholy mermaid that killed the sailors by her eyes. Being fascinated from the beauty of her eyes they became unaware by the traps of the Rhine. Loreley's rock, about 120 meters above the Rhine, is located near Sankt Goar, where the ruins of a 16th-century castle, Sankt Goar can be found.
The Black Forest Natural Reserve
With a total area of 7,450 km ², the Black Forest Natural Reserve is the largest in Germany and is one of the country's top tourist destinations. With wild landscapes, famous spa resorts such as Baden-Baden and medieval towns such as Freiburg im Breisgau, as well as picturesque villages, the area attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists every year. Located in the Land of Baden-Württemberg, southwestern Germany, the Black Forest Reserve has the springs of the Danube River. The "official" Danube spring, Donauquelle, is "marked" by a small pool in Donaueschingen, where the Brigach and Breg rivers form the Danube. The only river in Europe flowing from west to east, the Danube flows into the Black Sea, in Romania, after crossing the 2,860 kilometers through 10 states, starting from Donauquelle, the spring of the castle courtyard.
One of the attractions in the Black Forest is Freiburg im Breisgau, close to the border with France and Switzerland. Other tourist attractions closer to Freiburg im Breisgau are Strasbourg (about 85 km), Zurich (86 km) and Munich (350 km). Freiburg im Breisgau is one of the most important tourist attractions, being in the vicinity of the highest peak in the Black Forest, Feldberg. Freiburg im Breisgau is one of the oldest cities in Germany, an important university center and has as main attractions the medieval old center, Freiburg Minster-cathedral reaching116 meters in height, gates of the old medieval fortress - Martinstor, Schwabentor and a monastery.
