The Best Way to Explore an Off-beat Destination, Málaga, Spain

There must be a thousand questions floating all around your head, asking why Málaga? We've all heard many popular travel spots in Spain like Barcelona, Majorca and Seville for vacation. Why is it not one of them?

While the crowds are boasting around the innumerable fine white beaches and crystal clear water, chasing after the bewitching charms of the de rigueur shopping districts and the happening nightlife. Málaga came to the exact opposite, being away from those crowds.

With all our hope of escaping to somewhere contrary the swarming city of London, we stumbled upon this underrated city of Málaga and it is also one of the "best decision" we ever made!

To know exactly why Málaga is going to be on your travel list? This is what you need to know about Málaga.

IMG_0448.JPG

Despite the fact that Málaga is being referred to be an airport hub for many years, the vibrant city, unique and rich cultures, also the top-notched food being served all across Málaga will atonish you.

Also, if you haven’t already come across Málaga, it’s located right on the southern coast of Spain. Besides the beautiful landscape, the people of Málaga offer their unique hospitality with the brightest smiles on their faces to everyone who visits the country.

First, I am going to bring you to the historic market place, called the “Mercado de Atarazanas", which is possibly the one and only remaining part of the Old Moorish shipyard. The market hall is well decorated with the remaining horseshoe-shaped Islamic gateway that dates to the 14th century and instantly lifts the space with remarkable ancient histories.

IMG_0417.JPG

To me, the best way to travel and to know more about the culture always starts with food! Knowing the source of your food, getting connected with the locals, exploring the unknowns are simply the best part of traveling. If you ever speak about this market, everyone will strongly suggest you come early because good things run out quicker than you could ever imagine.

I couldn't believe what I saw upon stepping into the market!

IMG_0418.JPG

Look at all those beautifully stacked fresh fruits and vegetables. I have never ever been to a market where all the vendors are actually making an incredible effort to care for all their lovely products. Just when I thought it was just a personal habit of one particular vendor to stack things up nicely, I was shocked to see it happen literally in every single stall in the market. I was absolutely speechless and all I had in mind was how much I was already in love with this market!!

IMG_0420.JPG

To all of the perfectionists out there, this is definitely your heaven! Please take a moment to adore it. Isn’t that satisfying? The perfectly arranged figs and peaches are almost too pretty to be destroyed. I feel like I’m committing a crime if I ruin their natural beauty.

Just when you thought it couldn’t be better, look at those beautiful smiling faces all around the market.

IMG_0421.JPG

There’s one thing I’ve learned in life, and that is that a person can definitely change his perception of the environment and his perspective of how a country is, based on the people living there. I can affirm that the people there are the friendliest, and the hospitality is stunning! You’ll feel exactly like you’re at home because they are the people that make you feel welcome, as if you’re part of the family.

People there don’t just sell products, they are also the buyers who bought your heart without you even knowing it. That laughter and those smiles along the marketplace are fascinating. No wonder people say, "Happiness is contagious."

IMG_0422.JPG

Also, if you ever happen to be in Spain, get your money ready for the pickles and almonds!! That’s something that you never want to miss and go home empty handed. If you haven’t known already that almonds are essential and important to the gastronomy of Malaga and Andalusia, so is the salt. No one leaves Málaga without having their luggage stuffed with this nutty goodness.

And almonds lover should know that there are millions of flavours out there in the market—roasted or non-roasted, flavourings like black pepper, paprika, sugar coated, etc. But with all these choices, nothing beats the fresh and plum almonds that are salted perfectly! This leads to my point that the best and the most genuine way to taste Malaga is definitely the roasted version, "Alfarnate style." What makes those almonds so precious is that they are prepared with a precise and unique touch of salts that nothing can mess up. It’s no surprise that you’ll find small stalls selling them in “cartuchitos," small paper cones. You definitely won’t be able to resist it.

IMG_0425.JPG

Look at those hanging goodness. I am no food expert or anything to claim any credibility, but I am confident about what I put in my mouth! I assure you with all my heart that these are some of the best cured hams that I ever had in my life. Look at the extensive choices of hams with different ages, qualities, flavors, and fat content. It’s just amazing!

I bet you will salivate just by thinking of it. But once you have it in your mouth and devour it, it’s a brand new level that brings you to another dimension which I call "Heaven."

IMG_0426.JPG

The hanging "Jamon Iberico" instantly caught my attention and I had no choice but to pull out my wallet for it. I have absolutely no doubt that it was the best choice that I ever made. The indescribable deep and dark taste lingers in your mouth creating a convincing taste that you can never forget. Even though it’s not the cheapest, it is definitely worth every single cent. All I can think now is that I haven’t gotten more to snack on.

Never ever exit this market without having a seat at a tapas bar. Slow down the time by enjoying your perfect morning with some mouth-watering and authentic Spanish style cooking while enjoying the view of the busy market that is packed with action.

IMG_0437.JPG

I would never have thought that the food at the market could be this exquisite, and way beyond my expectations. Often the local quaint shop is the hidden gem that needs to be explored to uncover its true authenticity and quality.

No one would ever leave Spain without trying tapas, and also without ordering all sorts of tapas on the menu. Knowing that everything on the menu sounds interesting, we sometimes tend to over-order. But thanks to the ingenious creation of “tapas,” now tasting everything on the menu can be that easy.

IMG_0433.JPG

IMG_0434.JPG

We ordered the signature anchovies, codfish cooked with Spanish style tomato base sauce, freshly caught octopus salad with assorted vegetables, and also the iconic seafood paella with noodles. Not to mention a glass of beer, because it’s never too early for a glass of beer!

The only reason I could think of as to why the food served was outstanding was because they used fresh ingredients every day. Nothing beats seafood that is freshly caught from the sea. The best part was it was extremely affordable at less than 25 euros!

IMG_0440.JPG

Next, we headed directly to “Castillo Gibralfaro” which is an Old Moorish Castle Fortress which was built in the ninth century. The ruins depict the remnants of Málaga’s Islamic past in its craggy ramparts. This is definitely a hotspot for tourists from all over the world, and we definitely couldn’t skip this castle due to its alluring charms. Also what tempted me the most was the panoramic scenic view of Málaga.

IMG_0453.JPG

Along the to hike up to the top, you’ll witness the ancient beauty. The aging cactuses, withered plants portrayed a picture of how time passes quicker than you even know it in real life, where the old go and give rise to newer generations.

IMG_0442.JPG

The way to the castle was actually pretty exhausting due to the steep staircases and pathways. But there are seats along the way where you can actually rest and enjoy the view while you’re on the way up. Every stage rendered a unique view of Malaga which I found interesting and distinctive.

The castle was built with the purpose of being a lighthouse and also a military barracks. In the castle, there is a mini military museum which showcases a small scale model of the castle complex and also some ancient histories that you can find on the information board.

To be honest, there’s nothing much to see over there, but the highlight is definitely the spectacular view of Malaga. Especially when you finally make it to the top. You’ll be feeling like you’re on top of the world!

IMG_0449.JPG

When I say that I’m feeling like I’m on top of the world, I really do mean it!

IMG_0457.JPG

What I loved the most was the ambiance at the castle. It wasn’t overly crowded despite its fame. It is most probably because I went there early enough to beat the crowds. But the best spot in the whole castle was definitely the rooftop garden seat where you can seriously take a step back from life. Just enjoy the beautiful view with the constant breeze.

IMG_0466.JPG

We spent a solid hour strolling around the castle, understanding the history. And we also the immersed ourselves in the breathtaking view. As the heat was catching up, we went to a local cafe to reward ourselves with an icy cold smoothie and ice-cream to beat the heat.

While on our way to the cafe, I was amazed at how police in Malaga are still using the traditional way of horse riding for patrols. I had no choice but to stop and stare.

IMG_0166.JPG

Just so you know that my day couldn’t be better than this. You’re absolutely wrong!

I considered myself to be not just lucky but to be extremely lucky to have found the best restaurant that serves the best tapas in the whole of Malaga. Also, possibly the best tapas that I ever had in my entire life.

I am a person that doesn’t really stick to the same old restaurant even though the food might be good, simply because I am an explorer, particularly when it comes to food. I love to explore different flavors and methods of cooking by tasting. Thus, to be able to capture my heart and soul to a place not once but twice in a row, that has to be something outstanding!

This was “El Tapeo de Cervantes,” which is located at the heart of Malaga. Serving the best quality food and top-notch service this quaint little local owned restaurant has everything that you ever need. Be sure to make your booking in advance if you’re planning to go there for a wonderful dining experience. Or, try out your luck just like us when we stumbled upon this restaurant while they just started their operations.

Let’s have the photos to do them justice!

IMG_0490.JPG
Pan Seared Baby Squid with Spinach

IMG_0184.JPG

Roll of Smoked Salmon stuffed with Russian Salad

They were beyond good, simply because the chef really poured his heart and soul into creating every dish with love! I absolutely loved it from the bottom of my heart.

However, please do not blame me for sharing these delicious dishes with you. Blame me if I did not share these with you. Because a photo speaks a thousand words and my words couldn’t express enough of how good it was. Hopefully, you’ll feel inspired to travel all the way to this place which I called heaven to experience and taste it yourself. I swear that it’s going to be extremely worth it!

Overall, I am more than sure that Málaga is the city you need to include on your travel list soon. There is more than you could ever imagine, even if it’s just a small and peaceful city.

I heard this is one of the best place in Spain to stay, eat and drink.

I hear they have good climatic conditions too.

That is nonetheless true in my opinion, I've tasted one of the best tapas over there and I still can't get over of how enjoyed I was. But, honestly speaking, there are many other places in Spain that live up to the name of being the best place to stay and eat. It's also great to look into one's perspective of their ideal kind of lifestyle that they are seeking. It's undeniable that Malaga is great but others might think otherwise :)

The Mediterranean climate is the best in Europe, it’s a mild climate that extends all around the Mediterranean area and inside that area, Malaga has a microclimate that make the winters even milder.

Malaga and Andalusia have landscapes that will make us dream, views of valleys and villages that bring to our days memories of a past. Popular festivities, trekking routes, archaeological remains and so much more that you can discover each and every day.

You can live a very relaxed lifestyle. Enjoy the good weather, practice nautical sports, golf, trekking...and of course enjoy the beaches and the sun.

Good Luck

Thank you, Kouba! I am more than happy to read your comment and I totally agree with you. Málaga is more anyone could expect it. The landscape is incomparable and it's beyond distinctive in my opinion. I definitely enjoyed my day over there more than anything. The unbeatable charm made me give up on my tight schedule to extend my days over there and I made myself a promise, I will definitely return there!

The pictures in your post are absolutely captivating. My partner and I have dreams of traveling all over the world and experiencing lots of different cultures. This will be easier once our six children are grown up. lol, She has always wanted to visit Spain. The architecture is beautiful and we are big fans of sampling new foods. The Tuna has her mouth watering. I would love to visit the Coliseum in your first picture. I ove how it is situated in the middle of a community with buildings surrounding it. It doesn't look like it belongs but it fits in perfectly.

That's the Coliseum is one of my favorite too. It's rare to see this beautiful cross-section of the peaceful community and the glorious Coliseum standing side by side. This made me reflect on the daily life that we are living. Regardless of size or fame, we are all equal.

Also, I am glad to hear that you have a foodie family. Malaga is definitely the next city you should visit, I could ensure you more than anything that the food is top-notch! I would travel back there just for food and I couldn't express enough with words of how good they are.

Lastly, I am more than happy to know that it inspired you to travel there. I hope one day, your dream will come true :) Good luck!

Amazing city... Definitely worth a visit

Thank you very much! I really liked your photo!

Thank you so much for your compliment. It takes me a lot of time to compile it and express it in a way where everyone could feel the hospitality through words and showing the other side of the beauty of this magical city. Even though it's not a hotspot for many, this is definitely the place that needs to be placed on your bucket list :) Good luck!

Spain is a beautiful place, I always wanted to visit Barcelona. 🇪🇸

Great food, great atmosphere, friendly people and a rich history ticks all the boxes here.Would definitely visit Malaga,Spain when i get the chance.

May the luck be with you. Share your story here when you made it there will ya? :)

Will sure do.thank you :)

beautiful scenery

While visiting Spain many years ago, I wasn’t lucky to visit Malaga. Reading you post I can tell that Malaga is definitely worth a visit. While being located in southern coast of Spain and having beautiful landscape, it’s also very welcoming by residents of this amazing country. With historic market place, called the “Mercado de Atarazanas" with beautifully stacked fresh fruits and vegetables and the fresh and plum almonds that are salted perfectly. If I’m lucky enough to visit Malaga I will definitely not leave Spain without trying tapas and visiting an Old Moorish CastleCastillo Gibralfaro. You mentioned as a bonus people there are the friendliest, and the hospitality is stunning, which makes the visit even more enjoyable. Yes "Happiness is contagious.". Thanks to your beautiful review I will definitely keep Malaga on my bucket list.

A smile is like an endless ripple, it connects people and makes everyone feel appreciated. Also, it's a crime leaving Spain without having Tapas. I hope your day will come soon and good luck :)

Well from my experience I can say that whenever you visit any under-rated place you get to experience a lot which you cannot experience going to a hot destination.

That's so true! An underrated city doesn't mean that they are no good in any form, it's just because the beauty hasn't been discovered yet. By going to places like this, you'll truly experience the real hospitality of these genuine people. Being humble and friendly to welcome you, to learn and connect like big a family.

It's nice that you figured out this point :)

Never heard of Malaga, but it just moved up the list of places to visit. I especially like that you mentioned how friendly the people are (I hear mixed reviews about Spain). If you've been to Portugal, how would you compare the two? Also, is this just a day trip or should travelers plan to spend a couple days?

To be honest, I've heard a mix feelings about Spain too. It's hard for me to judge a book by its cover. The world is huge, every country has their own issues, but, from what I've learned, the people there are definitely some friendly people. They will just crack some jokes with you even though it's like a duck and a chicken communicating with their own languages, but, we just understand what our conversation is about and that is the best!

Unfortunately, I haven't yet make it to Portugal yet. Also, regarding your question, I've extended my stay in Malaga for a week because I am absolutely in love with the city. But, the truth is, you can't just leave Malaga for a day trip. You'll find yourself regret leaving this beautiful city for just a day.

I once by accident arrived at Malaga airport one day to early for my flight home. So i got me a hotel Downtown Malaga and had a great day exploring the city. It was great. So instead of being Angry about being to early at the airport, i got a great adventure exploring Malaga.

I am happy for you! The best way to discover a city is to have no expectations. :)

@adsactly Spanish people know how to enjoy life. They are clean, creative an cook so that you will never get full. I have been there and the thing I like most are the figs. I am happy you enjoyed it

Yes, true, they are extremely creative cooking. As a result, we all get to enjoy their creativity and I am more than happy to share it with everyone in the world to help them get more appreciation :D

@explorernations thanks for your comment

Never thought of Malaga as an escape destination, but it looks gorgeous!

Never had I thought of that too :) The beauty is beyond my capability to describe. You need to have it on your bucket list!

For nature lover like me, a this is completely high-quality place to explore; birdwatchers will find very end locations to study and make first-rate pic of all styles of distinguished birds; In spring a variety of incredible plants are bording the river. i read what was in there and it was amazing and fantastic place that must be visit.

Perfect! If you love nature, you'll love Malaga too. The combination of both nature and the buzzling streets are what makes Malaga extremely unique. Glad that you like it :)

Really interesting content. You gave us an exceptional analysis of Malaga. Congratulations for your post!!

I am just hoping to give everyone a clear insight of what they are going to get from traveling, even if it's off the hot traveling chart. Traveling doesn't need to be expensive, traveling to less touristy places will definitely widen your travel perspective. Hopefully, this will inspire you to travel too? :)

Thank you for showing what you have known in Malaga, I am looking forward to visiting this place. The food looks delicious and if the people are nice because I think it will be on my list of cities to meet.

This is one of my favorite city that I've traveled. Whether or not you're a foodie, you'll be amazed at how good the food is over there! Also, the people there are the friendliest! I am pretty sure you'll make some friends over there even if it's just some short days :) Good Luck!

Thank you very much! I hope to go and tell you about the experience. I am a food lover, so I will enjoy this part of the visit. Regards!

I Like Travel because that's Make me Happy

I've always wanted to visit Spain one day. The streets, the cities, the architecture, everything seems so different than anything else. I'm even dying inside when I see that food, haha. It looks so delicious :)

this absolutely a honor of beauty,i love this work..

Infind the off beat locations to be the true gems of travel.

They tend to be places that truly relax your soul. Its also alot easier on the wallet with folls not hotting you with touristy prices.

This place looks like it has so much character too.

That's extremely true. Touristy places will easily bleed your wallet, especially when for anyone who is not the best at bargaining. As I can say, Malaga is definitely a good spot anyone who just wants a relaxing holiday but a place to really enjoy their days and also for people who love food! Malaga is perfect for them.

Exactly! Always wanting to explore the less-travelled path. Thank you for the reminder!
