Preparing for a road trip? An international or domestic travel to visit family, for your child’s college graduation ceremony or an adventure with family and friends. A book to read during the trip should be one of the necessary items to grace your luggage.
Traveling can be a gruelling experience, with lots of waiting in the airport, long hours sitting while making transits, during these times, you can enjoy a book to make the most out of that downtime. Below is a collection of books to read while on a trip heading to a tropical paradise, a camping trip or to a big city.
1. ‘The Hobbit’ by J.R.R. Tolkien
This is one of my personal favourites, maybe because am a Lord of the Rings fan or simply because the book is pleasant and easy to read. It is perfect for a more relaxing travel. It’s a story of a hobbit going on an adventure. Who wouldn’t want to read that?
2. ‘The Life of Pi’ by Yann Martel
This is arguably one of those books that are much better than the movie (which by the way is an amazing blockbuster). Here you will read about Pi’s unintended adventure on a lifeboat in the middle of the ocean with his companion - a Bengal tiger. This book will keep you happy on a road trip, in the city, just about anywhere.
3. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
Going on an adventurous trip and bringing along a seriously delightful adventure book will spark up the right adrenaline mix to make the trip memorable. A simple and enchanting read, you’ll be inspired to travel and you can take this book anywhere from a metropolitan to the countryside. Go on a treasure hunt adventure with Santiago as he goes from Spain to Egypt. You’ll learn from the book that in life, your expectations aren’t always met.
4. The Best American Short Stories (2013 edition edited by Elizabeth Strout)
A fan of short stories? Sometimes it is hard to commit to a 400 and-something-paged book, especially when going on a trip. The Best American Short Stories should be on your list. It features a list of the best and newest American short stories, which are great pieces of literature. For the busy traveller, you can read a complete story in an hour or less.
5. Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert
This piece of literature delivers a note of excitement and smiles as you’ll be taunted to buy a one-way ticket for an adventure trip that may for at least a month. The book serves as a reminder that travelling causes one to grow as a person. Every single encounter with a different culture, a new food you eat, or the people you meet, travelling affects everyone as seen in Eat, Pray, Love.
6. The Art of Happiness by H.H. The Dalai Lama and Howard C. Cutler
If you are going on a vacation where all you have scheduled for is a good time, and relaxation this is a book you should definitely carry along with you. This book focuses on being a happier person, gain this will enhance your travel experience. Highly recommended for those looking for some self-reflection while travelling.
7. Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed
This is one of the best backpacking books out there. A memoir by Cheryl Strayed, wild acts as a testament on how wilderness, hiking and solitude will strengthen your spirit. This beautifully written and witty book will inspire you to take up both long distance hike and other outdoor camping activities. Although this book is best for camping and hiking trip, it’s also an empowering read for young women travelling alone.

I love reading while traveling.
I did not find the life of Pi captivating, I'd check out the short stories.
Meanwhile have you read any African short story book?

A good list! I would maybe add 'Shantaram' for the extra long trips, like maybe the Transiberian Railway or a summer month long road trip.
