antiquity
Although there is archaeological evidence that the area has been inhabited since 30,000 years ago, the city of Lisbon claimed to be one of the most coveted ocean ports as the Old World was set up millennia later. As the legends claim, Lisbon was founded by the Greek traveler and hero Ulis, on his way back from the Trojan War, his original name, Ulissipo or Olissipo, meaning the "enchanted port." And since all peoples - from Phoenicians, Celts and Romans to Arabs and even Spaniards - have been driven by the desire to dominate the city, it is justifiable for Lisbon to be described as a charming place.
Middle Ages
During the Roman period, starting in the 2nd century AD, Lisbon became one of the most important cities in the Iberian Peninsula, its name being changed to Felicitas Julia. Later he was captured by the Moors, more precisely in the 8th century, when he returned to his previous name. The Maurians resisted more than three centuries of attacks by Christian crusaders, losing the city in the first half of the 12th century. Starting in 1252, the city enjoys the status of capital of Portugal.
Modern age
The era of discoveries, from the fifteenth to the eighteenth centuries, made Port Fermecat the main starting point for Portuguese expeditions. The explorers sailed from this city to the whole world, discovering new territories in South America, Africa, and even a new road to India. This made Portugal one of the most powerful nations in Europe, while Lisbon was the most prosperous commercial center of the continent.
However, this epoch of flowering stopped abruptly in 1755, when a devastating earthquake destroyed half of the city's buildings. The earthquake was followed by fires and a more catastrophic tsunami, which ended the reign of the enchanted port on the oceans. However, Lisbon was rebuilt from its own ash by the first Marquees de Pombal, Sebastiao Jose de Carvalho e Melo, which arranged it with larger streets, turning it into a modern city in a modern world.
In the nineteenth century, Lisbon was captured by Napoleon Bonaparte, most of whose treasury was stolen, and most buildings were looted or simply destroyed. Lisbon has reborn since the return of the new king to the capital, expanding northwards as a result of industrial development
