My Cuba Trip: Inside Ernest Hemingway Home - Part 1

in travel •  7 years ago  (edited)

Hemingway lived in the house for more than 21 years (1939 to 1960). First renting it, and then buying it in 1940. The writer paid $12,500 for the property. The Finca at the time consisted of 15 acres (61,000 m2) with a farmhouse. As mentioned above he used to live there for more than 20 years. There he wrote "For Whom the Bell Tolls" and "The Old Man and the Sea".

As depression and illness overtook Hemingway, he left Cuba for good on July 25, 1960. After his death not even one year later, Mary Hemingway deeded the home, complete with furnishings and library, to the Cuban government, which made it into a museum devoted to the author.

As a visitor you could not enter the house, but only look into it through open doors and windows. Its a must travel destination while you in Cuba.

A travel tip: read either "The Old Man and the Sea" or "Island In The Stream" before visiting the finca. And now the pictures:
