It had been a goal of mine to travel to San Marino for several years now, the concept of it just intrigued me. A tiny country within Italy that many people don't even know exist. The trouble being I live in NY, and it's in Europe. But my oppurtunity came this past summer when I went to study abroad in Germany. I did extensive research and found the best way to get to San Marino with my limited resources, and did so on my last weekend in Europe. However it's not exactly easy to get there; my journey was as follows.

  1. I have to walk to the train station in my town (Fulda, Germany)

  1. Take the RE50 from Fulda to Frankfurt (Main) Hauptbahnhof (Frankfurt train station)

  1. I then take the subway, I believe it was like 8 from Frankfurt (Main) Hauptbahnhof to Frankfurt Flughafen (Frankfurt airport)

  2. From there I take a flight to Bologna, Italy.

  1. We're not done yet, then I had a few hours to look around Bologna and go to sleep before getting up at 6 am for an early train to Rimini

When you arrive in Rimini it's a chaotic tourist town, but of Italian tourists. By far one of the nicest groups of people I came across while traveling were Italians. I had to get a ticket to San Marino on the international bus line from here, which was only I believe 5 euro roundtrip or so very cheap on a very nice bus. Anyways, it's just me and some Russian tourists waiting there for about 30 minutes and the bus arrives. Which makes step #6 Rimini to San Marino

The bus said San Marino on it, and since no one really spoke English I just had to shrug and assume it was direct. (It has to be an act of magic I only got lost twice while traveling)

And oh my gosh, the bus ride there was STUNNING you can't put it into words, it was quite literally the most beautiful place I've ever seen. you take a winding road up the mountain to the capital of this teeny tiny country.

I was staying the night and had the whole day, the best thing you can do in my opinion is go to the tourist office (such nice people, again) and get a passport stamp for 5 euro. It's a very elaborate stamp, and not many people have it in their passport.

The main attractions to see in San Marino besides the a-b-s-o-l-u-t-e-l-y stunning views, is the three towers that guard the edges of the capital city, as well as the building where the government operates (pictured) there's a statue of Abraham Lincoln inside because he's an honorary citizen, interesting backstory look it up. ANYWAYS
I couldn't go in because the government was meeting on that day (sad face) But it was pretty cool, I literally walked passed their President by accident, im not kidding. But I suppose that's not difficult to do in a nation of 30k.

The views from one tower to the other, were absolutely incredible. It literally looks like something out of a fairy tale.

The perfect way to end out the trip was with a absolutely huge and delicious all you can eat free breakfast made by this little old San Marinian woman

And talk about a hotel room view (whooooweeee)

But it was totally worth it to make the trip and recommend it to any and all. I would go back in a heartbeat. Just for added imagery, here are some more photos of my visit to S.Marino

Well thank you! That's very kind!

A nice read with accompanied photos. I didn't know about San Marino, and I have been to quite a few Italian places.

Thanks! Yeah it's a shame more people don't know about it, beautiful country. But it's hard to get to.
