The Forgotten Thracian Observatory, Goat's Stone, Bulgaria

in travel •  6 years ago

High up in the mountains in the South-East part of Bulgaria, a majestic stone looks over the forest. To some it may look like an ordinary stone but few know the old stories connected with this place.

This is Goat's Stone. The tales say it used to be an old Thracian observatory which served two primary functions. The first one is that it provided a view on the surrounding area to look out from potential enemy attacks.

The second. more interesting function is that the rock was used as a find of a celestial map with which the Thracians observed the skies.

This hole is one of many which represent a different star. It is said that many people have been digging the stone for gold since it was thought that we ancients buried some here. There was also an ancient Thracian graveyard behind the stone but we didn't manage to go there.
