Hunting crocodiles in a 1,000m high Canyon in Southern Mexico (Eng/Spa)

in travel •  7 years ago  (edited)

Adventuring Eric is back.

A few months ago I explored a river in Honduras that had a considerable crocodile population but I couldn´t manage to find at least one, I got to see a lot of birds and local flora and fauna but no reptiles... I still had that rock in my shoe telling me I should´ve searched more thoroughly.

In late January I went to Guatemala through Chiapas, México and I heard about the Sumidero Canyon and the high posibilites of spotting crocodiles in their natural habitat so I decided to give it a go.

Getting was very easy as I was staying in a nearby town called San Cristobal de las Casas, this town is world famous for its local and bohemian vibe and a lot of people from all over the world comes here to do student exchanges or simply just live here for a semester, taking advantages of the amazing food, cheap prices and nice night life.

Here is the picture Gallery from my adventure

I wish I could drop more pictures of the Canyon, but those I took are the best that I got from a personal point of view while exploring the Canyon from below.

We found an altar for Guadalupe´s Virgin (The latin american version of Virgin Mary) and it was beautiful to feel how sacred the place was.

Awesome pics man, looks like you are having a lot of fun and adventures.

Very cool. Good effort finging them!

Nice canyon, it looks a bit similar than the canyon somewhere in China, except it's much wilder, with crocodiles, wow.

Wish i was there with you lol , i love adventure

cool! Looks like you found them :D

Wonderful site, one looked like a prayer mountain...... Let the adventure continue

It looks so exciting yet scary @anomadsoul! I got happier when I saw that there is a statuette of Mama Mary on the rocks! 😍

So how was the swimming? How big do yhey get?

Now that looks properly remote. Sheer rock faces on either side and crocs too to bargain with. This is a real old school adventure in the truest sense 100% upvoted.

Wow! That's a part of the world I have no knowledge of. I had no idea about such a canyon. What I like the best though, is that you are out there experiencing life! Blessings.

Great photos and info. I love that area and San Cristobal. That's where we would go when making our Visa runs from Guatemala. Beautiful town. Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful pictures. I over the way you give your best for quality contributions to the growth of this platform. Do be careful with crocodiles because the can be dangerous.

@eurogee

You found a crocodile in the end!

Very good post! Hope one day my posts will be as great as yours are. Thank you for supporting me:) 😊

Beautiful place . Great traveling , Best of luck .

Wow! @anomadsoul Am sure you had so much fun on this trip? Few of the pictures i love is the monkey that hangs on a tree and the crocodiles on the rock not too far from the bush.

A wonderful trip! I would not stand with my back to the crocodiles)).

beautiful pics, i loved the canyon and the altar, your smile and the t-shirt lol

Very special travel. You have enjoyed with wild nature.Your photos are very amazing and also good capture.Carry on.
Having fun

Amazing content with the relevant pictures. Keep going mate, you are doing it great! ❤️

Wonderfull trips you had @anomadsoul. I really should join you to travel someday.

Stunning! The vastness of the canyons sure can make one feel small and insignificant in the grand scheme of things. I specially love the fourth photos is it looks as though a tree is emerging from the rock. -Aimee

This is super cool. Amazing pictures and fun there too. Your hair is growing fast too haha

He's back!! Hell ya man. Adventure time! What an epic place. With those huge cliffs and the water it reminds of an awesome place here in Cali called Hetch Hetchy reservoir. That shrine for Guadalupe's Virgin is way cool. And I'm not even religious, I just think its such a cool spot for a shrine lol. And you got to see some crocodiles this time!! That's badass. Sucks to see all that trash back there in the driftwood though. Especially in such a beautiful spot. Have fun in Guatemala!

Que envidia mano!

beautiful pictures. the crocodile is huge.. Don't let it bite you.

Saludos

Amazing this traveling...... i appreciate this adventure. best of luck , resteemit

Thanks for sharing this @anomadsoul, today is chinese new year. hopefully you enjoy this day and have a good day!

Gracias

buen post, Bellas imágenes .
¿Esa es la virgen de Guadalupe?

Si, máximo símbolo religioso en México, saludos.

OMG, More scary than adventurous. I don't know what you guys achieve after putting your life in danger, but it's good to do what you like and especially like these adventurous, strong guts should be along with passion :)
Hats off to you boy.

whatever form and type can be made steemian. steemian is everywhere

Beautiful photography....looks like you had a blast on this adventure ride...I also enjoy going on a crocodile and hippo cruise here on the river in St.Lucia South Africa..

Those are some cool looking reptiles. Sad to see their habitat filled with plastic. I see that all the back home as well unfortunately.

noo way, you spotted crocodiles in the wild. how close were you? sometimes it's hard to tell from photos?

Oh! Wishing I could be there!! Great photos! Have lots of adventures for those of us who can no longer go adventuring!!

Cool trip! Love the little altar in the stone crevice... ❤️ Beautiful place... did you go swimming at all? 😉

Saludos

a very nice place to visit ...

Hey ... nice adventure! Hard to tell though if I would prefer reptiles over cold weather ... but beautiful photos ... keep trekking!

Dang!!! What a cool animal to see in nature!

That looks like animal resort in my city's resort center

I saw the picture of the blessed Virgin Mary.
And that is motivating.

I am a lover of our mother Mary and I know she loves you.

This is inspiring.

Thanks for this.

Oh my God my friend, that is freaking awesome! Adventuring Eric rocks ;)

lots of crocodiles in australia mate they eat people regularly here abrasos hermann

I think you also go to my country in Aceh exactly Rawa Singkil. There is many crocodile in there and a few species unic plant.

I have to say it, I am envious on you 😋. God, you are so lucky, now I want to go there!

Great pictures of the monkeys and crocs anomadsoul. I love taking these types of wildlife adventures myself also, mainly scuba diving but also jungle trecking. I remember in Thailand, kayaking in Koh Sok national park following a troupe of Macaque along the banks of the river.

Is that a spider monkey you managed to photograph?

I've never seen crocodile in their natural habitat but hopefully soon if I get over to south america like I plan. Until then, I'll live these experiences through reading amazing travel blogs like this on steemit ;-) Thanks for sharing

You really are traveler and adventure hunter.... nice blog @anomadaoul ... can't wait for the next blog...

Wow! Amazing view of this canyon, I feel like taking adventure here right now 👍

jajajaa

Sencillamente espectacular!!!

@anomadsoul this is look a great job and need a big effort to achieve this wonderful photography

What a beautiful adventure! Through your photos I travel with you ;)

Wow, what a journey. The altar looks magical.

WHAT!? You badass. How wild. I would love to do this someday! Maybe on a steemboat ;)

@anomadsoul I want to use this opportunity to say a very big thank you for your upvote I really appreciate you I believe I have a lot to learn from this kind gesture. I will make sure I follow up your post in other to learn more from a big mentor like you thank very much!!!
