Assos is like a triplex villa with its antique marine by the west coast of Aegean Sea on its first floor. Climbing up, you’ll see a small village called Behramkale where locals live recently in tiny stone houses (second floor). And, above there is the ancient city of Assos on top where Aristotle lived thousands of years ago (terrace).
Arriving the village on your way from marine you’ll see amphitheater and necropolis on your right. Although you can see some archeological sites below, next to or conjointly located with the village, the center of the ancient city is at the top. You can reach there by 5-10 minute walk on foot unless you get caught by souvenir shops.
Western side and Mytilini Island
Of course, security is one and maybe the main reason that ancient people build their city there, I think the beauty of the landscape is also one of the strong ones. Besides, relieving atmosphere of the marine and the uniqueness of the village when you climb the top and visit the ancient city some ideas show up in your mind how Aristotle find his inspiration.
A short look at south...
And Eastern side: Anatolia
Other than the fascinating view on top, you’ll see the ruins of Athena temple. Athena is believed as protecting goddess of the city so they called the temple with her name.
Food advice:
In the village, you can find black mulberry juices and verjuice which made out of unripe grapes. Perfect freshers with decent sweetness. And, you can try Turkish coffee which is cooked in its little cup (Ask for “dibek coffee”).
In general, one day can be spent in Assos. Don’t forget to experience all there parts of it.
