Gavilla Beach - Best Beach in Chiriqui Panama

in travel •  7 years ago

A few weeks ago, we loaded up the kids with some friends and headed to a new beach we had heard was great. It definitely did not disappoint! We were able to enjoy the calm water and take in a lot of fun scenery. The entire group had a total blast and we can't wait to go back. Sit back and imagine you were there!

One of my favorite things to do at the beach is collect shells. Gavilla beach did not disappoint. There were a ton of shells washing up on shore - including pieces of huge conch shells. Another thing we saw was hermit crabs! This was especially cool for our family because we read a book called Pagoo as part of our schooling. Seeing "Pagoo" up close was pretty neat!

A lot of beaches in the area have really bad undertow, so the kids can't play on their own. This beach was completely different. It was nice and calm and shallow. The kids spent most of the time playing at the edge of the water on their own. It was great!

Even my boy who hates getting in the ocean was playing in the water!

Another really exciting thing we noticed when we arrived was the monkeys in the trees! Wild monkeys on the beach - so super cool! We walked over to where they were hanging out to get a better view. They stayed way up in the trees but looked down at us. There were about 10 of them including a few babies!

The part of the beach we were at was set up really nicely with little grass huts. Each hut had a table and some chairs as well as a hammock. This is where the adults spent most of the time. There were tons of coconut trees providing shade and the temperature was just perfect. There were a lot of little areas to explore as well.

The only bad thing about Gavilla Beach was how you get there. It is close to Boca Chica which is also a nice beach. You drive for about 45 minutes away from David and then get off the main road. You then drive about 45 minutes on a bumpy dirt road. It is pretty rough in dry season...I can't imagine it when it is muddy! Some of the hills were so steep that our friends' cars slid back down them when they were trying to leave.

We had a delightful time and I can't wait to go back! The only thing we are all not excited about is the road to the beach! Two friends' cars slid and one friend's car lost its power steering. We were the only car that made it with no problems (we have 4x4 but didn't turn it on).

Monkeys...cool to watch...but a bit unsettling in the trees overhead...

Nice photos. Looks beautiful.

It was a great beach! I want to go back for sure...even with the crazy road. The monkeys were pretty cool. Totally left us alone. :)

This place looks great and it appears you had a really good time. Undertow is scary, so it is cool that you were able to let them play without having to worry about that. That looks like quite the road trying to get there. Thanks for sharing!

Yes, normally we make them all wear life jackets, but even with that the undertow is scary! There is one really bad beach and it, of course, is the closest. To get to a decent beach it is 2 hours. So crazy for Panama!

Nice photos! I like the last three, especially. Those huts look interesting! With hammocks and warm weather, that would be a great place to be right about now.

As for the boat, do those things float with that many people in them?! Too bad about the vehicle problems your friends experienced. I guess they don't have dune buggies down there, eh? Maybe someone could find an old-school Land Rover for the trip!

Yeah, it's a great place. We really enjoyed it! :) Yeah it was crazy that everyone had such a big problem with the cars. No dune buggies. ;)

Hahahah. I feel like such a wimp when I read your posts.

I’m like: monkeys, cars that slide, power steering power loss ... nope.

Glad you had a good time. Would love to hear more about that book :)

Lol - yeah it is always an adventure. :) We had a great time, even with all the car and road craziness. Ha! Thankfully the friends who lost their power steering already got their car fixed. Here is the post I wrote a while back about Pagoo. :)
