Six Popes followed one another during this period.
It was built in Gothic style and is one of the most beautiful monument in France
of this period.

The palace dominates the Rhone which passes at its feet,
the Saint-Benezet bridge served as an important strategic and commercial route.

A legend says that Pope Clement V would have hidden a treasure of gold inestimable,
confiscated to the Knights Templar and for fear of being robbed, he would have transferred to Villeneuve les Avignon, the Carthusian monks for security, in one of the souterains that dominates the city!
People are still looking for him, in vain ...

At the edge of the palace, you can go up to Rocher des Doms,
the oldest inhabited place of the city since Prehistory!

It is now transformed into a relaxing garden,
where you can drink coffee or eat, by the water and fountains.

I love that ever green place even in winter!
Most of all I can never forget the hosts in the B&B we stayed in on the way to Spain and back to the NL cause the owners are so kind.
The place was walking distance to "pont de avignon" is it the same as the St. Benezet Bridge?
could be cold now though :)
