National Parks--Crater Lake

This past summer the final destination of my annual National Parks camping trip was Redwood National Park in California. I figured why not fly into Portland, Oregon and stop by Crater Lake National Park on the drive down to California. So, that's exactly what we did. It was mostly a driving tour around the park with a few stops along the way to read some history and take some photos.

The deepest lake in the US, Crater Lake was formed after the collapse of a volcano in about 5700BC. The resulting lake is filled by snow melt and rainfall with no streams or rivers flowing into or out of it. One of the deepest blues I've seen in my short life of travel, I was taken aback by the reflection within.

These little flowers remind me of the truffula trees in the Dr. Suess book "The Lorax".

Wizard Island, a cinder cone formed shortly after the initial vocanic collapse, can be seen here. You can actually take a ferry to this island and hike to the top.
