Most likely, the Scaligero Castle was built on the remains of the previous Roman fort, by Leonardo della Scala, known as Mastino, in the 13th century. Leonardo was a member of the Scale family, which ruled Verona and its surroundings from 1262 to 1387. In 1405 the fort moved to the hands of the Venetian Republic, which also upgraded the fort. The exceptionally beautiful castle in the town of Sirmione is surrounded by water from Lake Garda on all sides. Once this fort was guarded by the approach of the city and any port for the fleet in charge of patrolling the lake. This castle is considered the most protected castle in Italy, and its beauty and charm contribute to the popularity of the city of Sirmione among tourists.
