This is a continuation of the series on Teotihuacan, which I started a few days earlier. There are literally thousands of structures of Teotihuacan, but the three main ones are from south to north, based on the basic map of the site; they are; Pyramid or Temple of the Feathered Serpent, Pyramid of the Sun, and Pyramid of the Moon. Today I will talk about the Pyramid of the Moon:
Pyramid of the Moon is not as big as the Pyramid of Sun; but this is where you will look as you walk the Avenue of the Dead. You will see it grows bigger and bigger against the backdrop of a dormant volcano called Cerro Gordo, which is located to the north of the ancient city. Then at one point, right at the plaza of the Moon, the skyline of the Pyramid will match Cerro Gordo, and the volcano won't be visible, as in the opening picture...
Cerro Gordo provides a striking visual reference for people walking on the Avenue of the Dead, for as you walk northward along the avenue, moving up and down platforms as the elevation rises and falls due to undulations in natural landscape and built architecture, you will see the volcano alternately framing and blending with the Pyramid of the Moon, located at the avenue’s northern terminus. Their interrelation creates an exciting and awe-inspiring experience, and you wonder at the beauty of the landscape and the architectural and engineering feats of the city’s ancient builders. It is a truly spiritual place.
Then you stop for a minute and look are the platforms all around you, and imagine there were buildings filled with 100s of people in this bustling city, and one day were just gone. No conflict, no invasion..The left their favorite city that took hundreds of years to built and occupy. You ask "Why"...but there is no answer...

Thank you for sharing. I was just there a month ago. As with really large structures pictures often don't do justice to the real-life experience. I found that standing at the end of the avenue of the dead and at the base of the pyramid to be very impactful. As I imagined what that place must have been like during the height of the civilization, clad in white lime and adorned in color and art, it must have been overwhelming. Especially if you consider the level of human development and technology of the time. It certainly could only have been accomplished while driven by the love or fear of a god(s).
During our visit, we also got to see a tournament of the ancient sport of Tlachtli.
Mexico City is an interesting and underappreciated place to visit and explore.

The vastness of the place is amazing... I can imagine what you said about walking towards the pyramid and have the mountain slowly 'disappear' behind it, while the pyramid itself looms larger and larger... impactful, indeed! And of course clouds at such a place have got to be no less than incredible too... :D
